Chautauqua Journal - Sept 10, 1926:
The Sedan Star-Times Newspaper,
DEPUTY SHERIFF IS KILLED BY OUTLAWS

MR. B. H. CASEBOLT - Submitted by Jean Feaster

B. H. Casebolt Shot Down While Pursuing Burglars of Wauneta Store.
The burglary of the Jeff Kirby store at Wauneta about 4 o'clock Friday morning was the beginning of a train of exciting incidents and tragedy in which two men were sprinkled with bird shot and B. H. Casebolt, deputy sheriff was killed at the point where the burglars were lost track of at Fall City on the State line.
The noise made by the burglars at the Kirby store in the early morning Friday awakened a nearby resident, who notified Clyde Kinnaman and Wm. Rutledge. They got up and secured shotguns and went to investigate. It was very dark, and impossible to see anything clearly and in making an investigation they walked into the power of the burglars who got the drop on them. Making them drop the shotguns the burglars made Kinnaman and Rutledge each take a load of goods they had ready at the store and put it in their car. The burglars cursed them freely and one struck Kinnaman on the head with a gun and the other gave Rutledge a vicious poke in the ribs with a weapon.
The goods loaded they made Kinnaman and Rutledge stand on the running board of their car and drive with them four miles west where they ordered them to dismount and take up a road running north, telling them at the same time that they were going to give them a hundred yards and then shoot them with their own guns. They started out in a walk when the two men cursed them and ordered them to run. At the command both started running and when about 100 yards distant received a charge of shot from a shotgun. Kinnaman got the most of the shot, being sprinkled from head to heels.
Deputy Sheriff B. H. Casebolt at Cedar Vale was notified of the trouble, and calling his near neighbor, C. B. Cable, they got on the way a few minutes behind the burglar car which went through there going west. They followed the car to Fall City on the state line about fifteen miles southwest of Cedar Vale where the burglar car drew up beside a filling station and stopped. Casebolt and Cable drew up behind the car a couple minutes later when Casebolt got out and was immediately shot down, three bullets penetrating his body. Cable rolled out on the opposite side of the car with his shotgun in his hand. The gun caught in the steering wheel of the car and he had to let loose of it. The burglars fired two shots at him as he went around the corner of a building, one shot grazing the calf of his leg. The tragedy halted the man hunt at this point from which the bandits disappeared and are still at large.
The funeral for the slain officer, who was a popular and well like citizen of Cedar Vale, was held at that place Sunday.
The officers have been working on the case constantly since the tragedy, but have been able to arrive at nothing definite. They have only a few ______ clues to work on which they hope may secure results.
Description of the two men is very meager. during that part of the trouble that took place at Wauneta it was so dark that Kinnaman and Rutledge could not get a clear view of their faces. At the scene of the tragedy at Fall City, it was daylight, but naturally under the excitement of the circumstances which only lasted a few brief moments a definite mental pictures of the countenances could not be gained. Even the make nor character of the car they were driving was not definitely secured, except that Kinnaman and Rutledge who rode on the running boards are positive in the statement that it was a large coupe.
By popular subscription the citizens of Cedar Vale have made up and offered a reward of $600 for the capture and conviction of the two men. The county commissioners met in special session Tuesday and posted a reward of $300 by the county, the maximum amount which could be offered for the crime of burglary. The murder was committed on the Kansas side of the line in Cowley county which places that crime in that official jurisdiction.
Chautauqua and Cowley county officers gave the case their entire attention the first few days following the tragedy, but state that they have not made much definite progress. Work will be continued as long as there is any hope of their capture.

Attempted Suicide

MR. L. F. CASEBOLT - submitted by Jean Feaster

One of the most shocking news that has reached this city for some time was the report that on Thanksgiving night that L.F. Casebolt had attempted suicide. He went to the barn and with a rope made of binding twine succeeded in suspending himself by the neck to some of the cross timbers. It happened however, that his brother-in-law, who was visiting there at the time, went to the barn and discovered Mr. Casebolt before he was dead and immediately cut him down and gave the alarm to the neighbors. Physicians were hurriedly sent for and all that was possible was done to restore him to consciousness, but all in vain. He died at one o'clock Saturday morning in great agony.

Mr. Casebolt, up to last September was a man of far above the average in physical and mental capacity, but he was taken down with typhoid fever while away on a business trip near Kansas City. He went through a very severe siege being delirious a great deal of the time, and as he was about ready to start home, he took a relapse and had another very sick spell. When after sufficiently recovering again, as he thought, he started home and arrived here about three weeks ago, but in a very feeble condition and apparently in an unbalanced state of mind which is the only cause that can be attributed for this rash act.

In the death of Mr. Casebolt, the community loses one of his best citizens, one who had resided and acquired a comfortable home and a host of friends during his fourteen years residence on Grand Creek. He leaves a sorrowing wife and five lovely children to remember him as only a kind father and husband is cherished in the memory of those who are left behind.

The funeral services were held at the residence Sunday morning. Elder Lyon of the Christian Church conducting the services. While the A.O.U.W. of this city took charge of the burial.

Those present from out of town at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Ben McLain of Peru, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Price and two sons, Dale and Joe of Cherryvale, Kansas, Mrs. Mabel Shultz, Mildred and Howard Kofoid of Piedmont, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bryan of Skedee, Okla., Mrs. Jim Sivalls, Mr. George Rhett, Mr. Metcalf, Mr. Giles of Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. Mary Dunlap, Mr. and Mrs. John Chittenden of Chautauqua, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Prichard of Peru, Kansas.
Mr. Ed Casteel was born on a farm near Valley Falls, Kansas, on Nov. 2, 1872. When he was 12 years old he moved with his parents to Greenwood county, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. He later moved to Chautauqua county, Kansas. It was here that he met and later married Ida, the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brewington. To this union two daughters, Pauline and Margie were born.
He was a good father and a loving companion. He always had a smile and a glad hand for everyone.
Mr. Casteel’s life was devoted to various occupations. For a number of years he owned and operated a livery barn in Sedan, later he was engaged in the mercantile business at Maramec, Oklahoma. The last ten years of his life he was employed as district manager of the Black, Sivalls & Bryson Tank Company.
During a revival meeting conducted by Rev. W. M. Martin, a Baptist evangelist, at Maramec, Okla. in the year 1913, Mr. Casteel was converted to the Christian faith, and united with the Baptist church at that place. In 1915 he transferred his membership to the First Baptist church of Sedan, where he was faithful to the church until God called him to his eternal home. For a number of years he served well as a trustee of the church, always going about in a quiet way trying to do the will of his Heavenly Father. In the passing of Mr. Casteel the church has lost one of its most zealous supporters and one of its most faithful members. He will be greatly missed by us all.
In the going of Mr. Casteel the home which he loved has suffered a great loss, the church has a vacancy that cannot be filled, and the community has lost a good and highly respected citizen.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and companion, his two daughters, Pauline and Margie, three sisters; Mrs. Myrtle Wilcox of San Benito, Texas, Mrs. Jessie Tannahill, of Liberty, Sask, Canada, Mrs. Mollie McLain of Peru, Kansas, and other relatives and a host of friends.
