MR. JAMES H. FISH - Submitted by Patti Hilton
James Harvey Fish was born Oct. 11, 1868, at Mapleton, Minn. And passed from this life at his farm home northwest of Sedan. Kansas, Tuesday evening, January 12, 1937. He did not quite reach his three score and ten years, as had been his desire.
James was the eldest son of Luke and Mary Ann Fish. His family was one of the early day settlers in the county. When he was eight years old his family moved to Maryland, then to Texas, and finally came to Wauneta, Kansas, at about Christmas time during the year 1882. The vicinity of Wauneta, was his home for fourteen years.
During early life he took up the pursuits of farming. He continued in this industry until his death. He was known as a very good farmer.
As a young man at Wauneta, Mr. Fish became convinced that preparation for the life to come was highly essential. He united with the Wauneta Methodist Protestant church and became determined that he would endeavor so to live that when death should come, he would be prepared. A neighbor has said, "If he was not prepared, it will certainly be too bad for the rest of us."
On May 31, 1936, after he was stricken with his fatal illness, he attended the Wauneta Sunday school and church services, as ever being desirous of being in the House of God, which meant so much to him. After his illness he was greatly missed from the services of the Sedan Methodist church of which he was an honored member at the of his death.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Sedan Rebekah Chapter and the Encampment at Peru.
On February 2, 1919, he was united in marriage to Blanche Pollock. This union was more closely forged by the birth of two daughters, Lorraine and Betty. The wife and daughters are left to cherish fond memories of father.
Of a family of six brothers and one sister he is the second to die, his brother, Otto having been killed in a tornado at Manitou, N. D., on July 1, 1935.
The survivors members of his family are his twin sister, Mrs. Jane Butterfield of Sedan, Kansas, Everett of Sedan; Orlo of Elk Point, Canada; Horry of Redfield, S. C. ; and Hugh of Peru; half brothers, Francis Fish and Fordyce Fish of Warroad, Minnesota, and a half sister, Mrs. Ida Hostetter of Glenville, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Sedan Thursday afternoon, January 154th, conducted by Rev. H. C. Benton. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery with the burial service of the Odd Fellows order given at the grave.
Among relatives from out of town here to attend the funeral of James Fish last Thursday afternoon were Mrs. Ella Malone and Grover Dryden of Oklahoma City, Ed Dryden of Winfield, Mr. And Mrs. Frank Dryden of Moline, and Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Fish of Peru.

DEATH OF PIONEER LADY
Mrs. Mary Ann Fish Called to Her Eternal Reward
Mrs. Mary Ann Fish, well known a pioneer lady of the county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jane Butterfield, in Sedan, Thursday, January 3. She had been in her usual condition of health until a few days prior when she took influenza. No one thought but what she would recover until the day after the New Year, when it was noticed she was not so well. From this time on she grew worse until at 3:15 on the afternoon of January 3rd, the spirit of Mrs. Fish took its departure from this tabernacle of clay and winged its way to the Eternal City to await the resurrection of the just. She was aged 84 years, 8 months and 8 days.
Funeral service was conducted at the Baptist church in Sedan; Sunday afternoon, January 6, at 2:30, in charge of Rev. J. W. Campbell, assisted by Rev. L. E. Griffith. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mary Ann Harvey was born April 26, 1844, in Herkimer County, New York. When she was a small girl three years of age her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Harvey, moved to Palmyra, Wisconsin. It was here that she grew to womanhood.
Miss Harvey was united in marriage to Mr. Luke M. Fish of Mapleton, Minnesota, on November 26, 1866. When she became the wife of Mr. Fish, she became the stepmother of seven children. They had born to their union seven children. It was her happy service, along with that of her husband, to see all of the fourteen little lives committed to their parenthood and care raised to be grown men and women.
In the year 1882 the family moved to Chautauqua County, Kansas, and went on a farm near Wauneta, where they lived until 1896, when they moved to Gravette, Arkansas. They lived at Gravette until the year 1910, when because of failing health, they came back to Chautauqua County to reside with their son, Mr. E. I. Fish of Sedan, Kansas.
Mrs. Fish's life was greatly saddened on September 19, 1916, at which time she lost her husband with whom she had toiled and sacrificed for nearly fifty years. She had been ailing at the time of Mr. Fish's death, with rheumatism. This lingering illness grew worse until she was compelled to take to her bed to which she was confined for about twelve years. During this time she had made her home with daughter, Mrs. Jane Butterfield, of Sedan, where she was a patient sufferer and where loving hands cared tenderly for her.
When a young woman she professed faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined the United Brethren Church. As long as health permitted she was always active in church work. While living at Wauneta she taught a Sunday school class of boys at the Methodist church and it was her happy lot to live to see all the boys converted to the Christian faith. At the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist church of Sedan, Kansas.
