Sedan Times-Star - 1930

MRS. ANNA GLENN

Mrs. Anna Glenn, aged 84 years, a resident of Sedan and vicinity for the past 40 years, died at 1:16 Monday morning at Mercy hospital, Independence. She was removed from her home here to Independence last Friday night, suffering from an obstruction of the intestines and a gangrenous condition of her appendix. An emergency operation was performed but her condition was so serious that it offered no hope of relief.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. W. Campbell assisted by the Reverends L. E. Griffith and G. L. Eslick. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Glenn was born at Worrick, Indiana, July 31, 1865. When a young woman she was united in marriage to Mr. James H. Brewster in 1882, in Indiana. Nine children were born to their union, three of whom preceeded her in death. The family moved to Chautauqua county, Kansas, in the year 1890, where the deceased had since lived most of the time. She was left a widow by the death of Mr. Brewster on July 31, 1905. In the year 1908 she was united in the second marriage to the Rev. I. H. Glenn of Sedan. One daughter was born to this union. Rev. Glenn died in the year 1921.

She made the good confession of the Christian faith early in life, allied herself with the Christian forces and became an ardent worker for the Lord. She was a devoted Christian, believed in the old book, the Bible, and practiced its teachings in precept and example. She loved the Lord with all of her heart, soul, mind and strength, and her neighbor as herself. At the time of her death ahe was a member of the Methodist Church of Sedan. Her age was 64 years, four months and eight days.

She is survived by five sons, Fred Brewster of Sedan, Kansas, Francis Brewster of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Otto Brewster of Seminole, Oklahoma, Willard Brewster of Burbank, Oklahoma, and Henry Brewster of Westchester, Pennsylvania; two daughters, Mrs. Ella Brewster-Doty of Sedan, and Mrs. Grace Glenn Craig of Windsor, Canada; Twenty grandchildren; one great-grand-child, three sisters, Mrs. E. L. McAfee, Mrs. J. L. McAfee and Mrs. Sarah Fisher all of the Sedan vicinity; two brothers, George and James Mills of Sedan; other relatives and a host of friends.

Thursday Rites For Nellie Glenn
Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie Ollie Glenn will be held in the Graves-Baird chapel at 10 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Clarence Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Glenn died early Monday in the Hays hospital at Cedar Vale where she had been a patient for several months. She was born August 23, 1898, to Joel and Rosalie Thrasher. She was married to Frank E. Glenn on July 22, 1916, at Sedan. Mrs. Glenn retired on Dec., 24, 1963, after 22 years with the Ackarman grocery and hardware stores. Before becoming affiliated with Ackarmans, she had worked in a number of businesses on Sedan's main street.

She was a member of the Christian church, Friendship club and Royal neighbor lodge.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ernestine I. Slaughter of Wichita, Mrs. Rose Emma Wright of Borger, Texas, and Mrs. Betty Jo Ryan of Independence; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Webb, of Sedan; and one brother Alvin Thrasher, of Williams, Ariz.

MRS. CANDACE "CANDY" GLYNN

SEDAN - Candace Elaine “Candy” Glynn, 48, of Sedan, Kan. died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at her home in Sedan.

She was born Feb. 3, 1955 in Coffeyville, Kan. to James Lee and Delores E. (Hall) Harmon. Candy grew up in Sedan, attending Sedan schools, until she was a sophomore in high school, when she moved to Wichita, completing her high school education at West High School before attending and graduating from Wichita State University.

In January 1974, she married Steve Smith in Sedan. Following their marriage, they made their home in Wichita. They were divorced in 1989.

On Aug. 28, 2000, she married David Glynn in Sedan. Following their marriage, Candy divided her time between her home in Sedan, where David was a pharmacist, and her home in Wichita, where she designed and installed computer systems for banks, doing contract work with Kennedy and Coe in Wichita.

Candy was a member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan.

Survivors include her husband, David Glynn, of the home in Sedan, one daughter, Amber Smith, Lawrence, Kan., her mother and her husband, Delores and Gary Jansen, Goddard, Kan., one brother, James Jeffry Harmon, Kansas City, Mo., her maternal grandparents, Opal and Howard Field, Wichita, Kan. and one grandson, Sage Aaron Porter, Lawrence, Kan. She was preceded in death by one son, Aaron Joel Smith, on Oct. 15, 1991 and her father, James Lee Harmon in 1999.

Services were held on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Sedan with Rev. Penny Goldberg officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

The family requests memorials to the Aaron Joel Smith Memorial Fund established with the Wichita United Way. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan was in charge of the arrangements.

MR. DAVID R. GLYNN

David Robert Glynn died Jan. 6, 2007.

David was born in Nowata, Okla., the son of Richard Edwin Glynn and Dewey Marie Rozzell Glynn on August 3, 1945. He graduated from Neodesha High School in May of 1963 and served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970. David attended the University of Kansas from 1970 to l973 and graduated with honors from the School of Pharmacy. He practiced pharmacy in Sedan from 1974 to 2003.

He is survived by his son, Andrew, of Tonganoxic, his son, Matthew, of Topeka, his sister, Sue Smith, of Neosho, Mo., his brother, Roy Glynn, of Rich Hill, Mo., his brother, John Glynn, of Ypsilanti, Mich., and his four grandchildren Abigail, Jackson, Audrey, and Hayden.

Memorial Services will be held at the Sedan First Christian Church on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the David R. Glynn memorial fund at the First Christian Church of Sedan 204 N. Chautauqua, Sedan, KS. 67361.


GOLDEN - 1932

A 4-pound son, born last Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. Golden at the home of her mother, Mrs. Jess Gorby died monday morning. Mrs. Golden before her marriage was Malba Gorby.

MR. CARLIE O. GOODE

Carlie 0. Goode, age 89, of Sedan, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2007 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.

He was born Aug. 22, 1917 in Lowe, Kan., to William and Bessie (Smith) Goode. He attended school at the Lowe Community School until the eighth grade. He served in the United States Anny from April 16, 1945 to Oct. 28, 1946. He married Geneva Usher. They later divorced. He worked as a construction superintendent for MEC in Neodesha retiring after 20 years. He lived in Neodesha for most of his adult life, moving to Sedan in the late 1970’s. After his retirement, he was a caretaker for the Stephen’s Farm, which was located northwest of Sedan.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by three sons, Ronnie Goode of Crestview, Ha., Kellie D. Goode of Nixa, Mo., and Wayne Goode of Kennesaw, Ga.; two brothers, Claudie Goode of Independence, Kan., and Samuel Goode of Coffeyville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 9 a.m.9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 2, and from 9-11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 3, at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday,Aug. 3, 2007 at the Round Mound Cemetery northwest of Sedan, with Reverend Jerry Bever officiating.

The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Pleasant Valley Manor Activity Fund and these remembrances may be left at the funeral home.

Claudie Russell Goode of Independence, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Okla. He was 89 years old.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2008, at the Epiphany Episcopal Church of Independence under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Goode's memory to the First Baptist Church of Sedan, the Mercy Hospital Foundation or the Epiphany Episcopal Church of Independence. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

MR. ROBERT M. GOODE

ARKANSAS CITY - Robert Michael “Mike” Goode, 51, of Arkansas City, Kan., died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Round Mound Cemetery, with Pastor Mark Boxman officiating.

Born April 15, 1953 in Winfield, Mike was the son of Floyd and Marjorie (Ward) Goode. Mike grew up and attended Cedar Vale schools, graduating from high school in 1971. After high school, Mike attended Pittsburg State University and earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Friends University. He became a radiology technician through St. Joseph.

On Feb. 26, 1994, Mike married Robin Turner in Reno, Nev. and the couple made their home in northern and southern California before moving to Arkansas City in 2000. Mike was the radiology department team leader at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. He was a member of several radiology fellowships and was also a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Mike is survived by his wife, Robin, of the home, daughter, Jacie, of the home, three sons, Dustin and his wife, Amy, Victorville, Calif., Matt and his wife, Hillary, Hemet, Calif., and Travis, Costa Mesa, Calif., five sisters, Nancy Schmid, Cheyenne, Wyo., Jeanette Lyke, Cedar Vale, Kan., Billie Finley, Winfield, Kan., Sheriy Lancaster, Atlanta, Ga. and Debbie Collingsworth, Oxford, Kan. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Alexia. A memorial has been established with the SCKRMC replacement project fund and contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Mrs. J. S. Gorby Died
Mrs J. S. Gorby died at her home in Peru Sunday, Oct 8th, after a long illness.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in that city Sunday at 2 p.m. by her former pastor, Rev. J.B. Brown, Beautiful music was furnished by James Oliver, Rengler, Hart, Miss Crippen, Messrs. L. F. Misgades, John Keller and Carl McDonald. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

Albina Medora Gorby was born at Sheffield, Ill., May 3, 1854. She came to Ks. with her parents in 1861 and moved to Chautauqua County Apr, 1870.

She was united in marriage to J.S. Gorby Aug, 29, 1874. Mrs Gorby was a member of Peru W.R.C. No. 270. She was the mother of seven children and leaves four of these and her husband to mourn.

They are Ella, Mrs Edna Jenkins, Jesse Gorby, Mrs. Elsie Boon, one brother, A.L. Clark, two sisters, Mrs. Ida Summers and Mrs. Della Tammage. She leaves besides thirteen grandchildren and a host of friends.

Glenn Eugene Gorby, 78, of Peru, died Saturday at Nowata General Hospital in Nowata, Okla. He was born March 1, 1910 to Jess and Nellie McClain Gorby. He married Vivian Sanborn on Jan. 11, 1930 at Bartlesville, Okla., and she survives at the home.

He was a farmer and oil field worker. He served in the US Navy in World War II, was a member of the Christian Church of Peru; VFW of Sedan; life member of the American Legion of Sedan. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and Caney Valley Electric board of trustees.

He is survived by two sons, Gerald of Bixby, Okla., and Kenneth of Nowata, Okla.; two brothers, Neal of Springfield, Ill., and Doyle of Peru; two sisters, Edith Greer of Portland, Ore., and Ethel Ray of Visialis, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Nov. 15, in the Greenwood Cemetery of Sedan. Officiating at the service was Ben Contreras. Graveside services were under the direction of Graves Funeral Home of Caney. The family suggests memorials to the Peru Senior Citizens.

MR. JESSE C. GORBY - Submitted by Freida Wells

J. C. Gorby Jesse Clayton Gorby was born at Peru, Kansas, July 19, 1883, and passed away at Mercy Hospital at Independence, Kansas Nov. 15, 1928, at the age of 45 years, 3 months, 26 days. The deceases was born and raised on his father's farm west of Peru, after his marriage moving to his grandfather’s homestead, later moving to the farm where he resided at the time of his death. He grew to manhood in this community having attended the public schools here. He was a member of the M. W. A. of Peru.

He was married to Nellie M. McClain, Oct. 17, 1906. To this union were born seven children, Ethel E.. Glenn E., John F., Mabel L, Neil C. and Doyle C. Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his loss his aged father J. S. Gorby, two sisters, Mrs. Ella Mitchell, and Mrs. Elsie Boone, two grandchildren, Virginia and Dean Pierson, and many other relatives and a host of friends. His mother, one sister and the one brother have preceded him in death. He was always a kind and loving father, husband and brother.

Vivian Faye (Sanborn) Gorby, age 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 1990 at the Nowata Nursing Center in Nowata, Okla. She was a former resident of Peru. She was born Nov. 14, 1913 to Irvin J. and Iantha (Copple) Sanborn in Sedan. She was raised in the Sedan area and was married to Glenn E. Gorby on Jan. 11, 1930 in Bartlesville, Okla. They made their first home in rural Peru until his death on Nov. 12, 1988. At that time she moved to Nowata.

She was a member of the Christian church of Sedan. She was also a member of the Women’s VFW Auxiliary of Sedan and Senior Citizens of Peru. Mrs. Gorby is survived by two sons, Gerald Gorby of Bixby, Okla. and Kenneth Gorby of Nowata. She is also survived by one sister, Janie Elmira McHenry of Kansas City, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services for Vivian Faye Gorby were Saturday, Feb. 17, at 9:30 a.m. at the Graves Memorial Chapel in Caney. The Rev. Kendall Hendrickson of the First Church of God of Nowata presided at the service. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan. A memorial has bee established for the Peru Senior Citizens.

MRS. HAZEL GORDON

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Hazel I. Gordon, 89, of Hutchinson, Kan., died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at the Dillon Living Center.

She was born on Aug. 30, 1914 in Elgin, Kan. to James E. and Mabel V. (Loftin) Sweeney. She graduated from Elgin High School and received her teaching degree from Pittsburg State College. She taught for several years in Chautauqua County and as a substitute teacher in the Hutchinson Public Schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of EHU.

She married Ralph E. Gordon on Nov. 25, 1938 in Tonganoxie, Kan. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy J0 Gordon and her parents.

She is survived by her son Greg and his wife Kay Gordon, Hutchinson, Kan., brothers Cleman Sweeney, Waco, Texas and James Sweeney, Sallisaw, Okla., and three grandchildren, Ryan, Amber and Ashley Gordon.

Services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at the Elliott Chapel at 9 a.m. with Rev. Mark Conard officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Rosedale Cemetery in Hewins, Kan.

Memorials may be sent for the church in care of the Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

MRS. RONALDA M. GORDON

SEDAN - Ronalda Mary Gordon, age 92, of Sedan, Kan. passed away early Thursday morning, April 6, 2006, at the Pleasant Valley Nursing Home in Sedan, Kan.

She was born Dec. 29, 1913 in Caldwell, Kan. to John Franklin Macklin and Freeda Mae Macklin.

On Aug. 11, 1930 she married Joseph Franklin Gordon in Wellington, Kan. They lived in the Argonia and Caldwell community. The family moved to Peru, Kan. in 1948.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Wilba Gorby, Peru, Kan. and Dorothy Kendrick, Caney, Kan. and one son, Leon Gordon, Caney, Kan., numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, her parents, two daughters, Zola Liberton and Brenda Vernon, six grandsons, three brothers and one sister.

Graveside services were held on Monday, April 10, 2006, at 11 a.m., at the Argonia City Cemetery in Argonia, Kan. Pastor Mike Morris of the First Assembly of God Church of Caney, Kan. presided.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Pleasant Valley Nursing Home in Sedan, Kan.

MR. GROVER L. GORRELL

PERU Grover L. Gorrell, 78, of Peru died Monday, March 3, 2003 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Okla.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 6, 2003 at 3 p.m. at the Graves Funeral Home Chapel where Earl Tresner, officiated. Burial followed at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan with Military Rites performed by Fort Riley.

Mr. Gorrell was born Dec. 17, 1924 to Grover Orwood and Marion Frances (Longpine) Gorrell in Peru, Kan. He grew up and attended high school in Peru. He served in the U.S.Army during World War II. He was a rancher all around the Kansas and oklahoma area. He enjoyed wood working.

Mr. Gorrell is survived by two daughters from his first marriage to Marcella Williams; Marleeta Kay Ehret of Battle Creek, Michigan; and Durleeta Smith of Coffeyville, Kan.; one brother, J.C. Gorrell of Peru, Kan.; four sisters, Vivetta of Calif., Novice Shobe and Winnie May Long both of Peru, Kan., and Norma of Texas; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his second wife, Marie.

Memorial donations can be made out to the Veterans Administration Hospital and can be left with the funeral home.

MR. JOHN C. GORRELL

John C. “J.C.” Gorrell, age 68 of Peru passed away Tuesday morning, June 5, 2007 at his residence in Peru.

He was born Jan. 16, 1939 in rural Peru to Grover and Marion Frances (Longpine) Gorrell. He grew up in the Peru area graduating from Peru High School in 1956 as salutatorian of his class. He lived in the Peru area all of his life.

On Sept. 10, 1956, he married Neva Smith in Sedan. They made their home in rural Peru where he worked as an oilfield pumper for a number of different companies. He worked for Layton Oil Company and Sun Oil Company and worked for Equinox Oil Company. He also worked as a rancher.

He attended Jonesburg Church and he enjoyed going to rodeos, team roping, riding horses, and was active in the Sedan 4-H Club for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Neva Gorrell of the home; two daughters, Barbara and her husband Jaime Long of Bartlesville, Okla.; Diana and her husband Kenneth Mitchell of Grove, Okla., one son, Jason Gorreil and friend Bekah of rural Peru, three sisters, Novice Shobe of Peru, Viva Brousseau of California, and Norma Welliver of Nashville, Tenn., 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, John and Kenny and one daughter Martha, one brother and one sister.

Friends may call Thursday, June 7 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

Graveside services will be held Friday, June 8, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua with Earl Tresner officiating.

The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Sedan 4-H Club or the Jonesburg Church, memorials may be left with the Funeral Home. David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MARIE GORRELL

Marie Gorrell, age 75, of Peru, Kansas, formerly of the South Coffeyville area, died Friday morning, August 17, 2001, at St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa, OK.

Mrs. Gorrell was born August 18, 1925 to Thomas Francis and Ola Augusta ‘Gussie’ (McKee) Keeton in Nowata County in the Thompson community. She lived near this area most of her life.

In August of 1941, she married Harvey Hamid Plowman. He preceded her in death on November 2, 1972. On October 13, 1973, she married Orville Eme at the Pleasant View Church at rural South Coffeyville. He died December 4, 1984. She later moved to South Coffeyville to give care to her father.

On November 15, 1991, she married Grover L. Gorrell of Peru, KS. He survives at the home.

She attended Pleasant View Church most of her life. She was a Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Pink Lady, a member of James Jolly Janes Club and past president of the James Community Club and T.O.P.S.

Survivors include her husband, Grover, of the home, one son, Kenneth Dwayne Plowman, South Coffeyville, OK, one daughter, Elaine Delk, Hillsboro, KS, two stepdaughters, Kay Ehert, Battle Creek, MI and Durleeta Smith, Coffeyville, KS, two brothers, Clarence Keeton, rural South Coffeyville, OK and Donald Keeton, rural Coffeyville, KS, four grandchilthen and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 20, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. in Ford-Wulf-Bruns Edgewood Service Chapel, with burial in the north Edna Cemetery, Edna, KS. Memorial gifts may be given to Pleasant View Church.
