MR. BILLIE J. HEALE
COFFEYVILLE - Billie J. Heale, 74, of Coffeyville, Kan. passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 19, 1931 at Coffeyville to Robert Adam and Mildred (Taylor) Heale. He grew up in Coffeyville, where he received his education.
In 1952, he married Mary Arnold in Coffeyville. They were later divorced.
In 1960 he married Mary Brooks in Coffeyville. Following their marriage, they lived in Flagstaff, Ariz. and Joplin, Mo., where Mr. Heale was employed by an outdoor advertising company putting up billboards. They returned to Coffeyville, where he was employed for many years as a welder at Jensen Brothers. Following his retirement he worked at Thompson Brothers.
He attended the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home in Coffeyville, Kan.; one son, Danny Duree, Wichita, Kan.; two daughters, Nancy Shamblin and Belinda Sue Moses, both of Wichita, Kan.; one brother, Robert Heale, Jr., Dearing, Kan.; two sisters, Beverly Ann Humphrey, Chetopa, Kan. and Marie Gurskey, Sedan, Kan.; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Billie Jim Heale; and one daughter, Connie Heale.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, in the Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Gary Stevens officiating.
Friends may call op Wednesday from 9-9 p.m. and Thursday from 9-12 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville.
The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association and contributions may be left with the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

MR. EVERETT T. HEARLSON
WELLINGTON - Everett T. Hearlson, Sr., age 87, Wellington resident since 1965, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2006, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington surrounded by his family.
Everett was a mechanic for John Deere working in Sedan and Wellington before retiring after 33 years of service.
He was born on June 1, 1919, in Canton, SD, to Irvin and Florence (Rice) Hearlson.
Everett served his country during WW II in the United States Army. He served from November of 1942 until February of 1946, and was the recipient of the Silver Star. He traveled extensively in Germany during his tour of duty.
On Jan. 3, 1953, he married June L. Ingels in Winchester, Kan.
Everett was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was an assistant scout master for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, June Hearlson of Wellington; sons Wayne Hearlson of Wellington, Steven Ingels of Wellington, Everett T. Hearlson II of Wellington, Alan Hearlson and his wife Kim of Wellington, and Alvin Hearlson and his wife Junell of Mulvane; daughters Barbara Smith and her husband Sid of Cedar Vale, Mary Elaine Talkington and her husband Ken of Emporia, Evelyn Hearlson of Wellington, and Beverly Garcia and her husband John of Simi Valley, Calif.; brothers Leo Hearlson of Spokane, Wash., and Lester Hearlson of Illinois; 32 grandchildren; and 25 greatgrandchildren.
Everett is predeceased by his parents; two Sons Gilbert and Irvin Hearlson; one brother Ernest Hearlson; and one sister Bea Hamilton.
Graveside Services were held at 10 a.m., on Friday, July 28, 2006, at Prairie Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Zane Brooks of the First Free Will Baptist Church officiated.
Visitation was held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 27, 2006, from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m.
A memorial has been established in his name with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Contributions can be left at the funeral home. Frank Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
MRS. SARAH MCCLEARY HEAVLIN

Mrs. Sarah McCleary Heavlin was born Jan. 1, 1839 in Ohio and lived there until she was 16 years old when she moved with her parents to Indiana. In May, 1856, she was married to J. E. Heavlin. They lived there until they came to Kansas in 1885. To this union six children were born, four girls and two boys. Four children died while young and Mrs. Belle Heavlin Copple died in February, 1911. The oldest, Mrs. Lizzie Wade is now living in east Sedan. Mr. Heavlin died at his home in the east part of town May 17, 1909, and since that time Mrs. Heavlin's granddaughter, Miss Iantha Copple has made her home with her.
She was a faithful member of the Holiness church and was well liked by all who knew her. She had been sice three weeks but was only bed-fast two days. She had gone to her daughter's, Mrs. Lizzie Wade's Thursday afternoon and was ther when death claimed her Sunday evening at 8:30 o'clock.
The funeral services were held from the residence of B. Wade on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock and the remains were laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery. She leaves a number of relatives and friends to mourn her death.
MR. JOHN W. HEDGES
John W. Hedges, 95, of Emporia, died Oct. 25, 2000 at the Holiday Resort at Emporia.
He was born Sept. 10, 1905 at Lansing, KS to William D. and Sarah (Strouse) Hedges. He married Winifred Jessie Robison at Emporia on May 4,1929. She died Jan. 8, 1982.
Surviving family members are two nephews, Bill Hedges of Merriam, KS and Jeffrey Hedges of Emporia; two nieces, Mona McKenan of Emporia, KS and Roberta Hedges of Emporia; five great-nieces and a companion, Stella Vollentine of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Robert Hedges.
Mr. Hedges was an educator for 35 years. He received his B.S. degree from Emporia Teachers College (Emporia State University is the current name) and his Masters degree from Pittsburg State University. He began his teaching at Peru, KS, where he was a teacher and Superintendent for 15 years. He was Superintendent of Schools at Lebo, KS for 8 years and retired as principal of the High Plains School at Leoti, KS.
Since his retirement, he has spent the past 28 winters in Mesa, AZ. He was an ardent participant in the Senior Olympics of Kansas and Arizona. He won over 100 medals in the Shot-Put, Discus and Javelin events. He also played shuffleboard. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Peru.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 30, at 1:30 p.m. at the Patio Garden in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Services were conducted by Phil Patrick of Kansas City, KS. Entombment was in Memorial Lawn Mausoleum in the Court of Eternal Light. Memorials may be left with the Kansas Special Olympics at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.
She was united in marriage on September 28, 1940 to Harold “Clayton” Hedges in Sedan, Kansas. To this union one daughter was born, Norma Jean Boss. Ruth lived on the Hedges family farm southeast of Severy for 61 years.
She worked as a cook in Cafes in the Severy area and later at the Howard Twilight Manor. She enjoyed her garden, cooking, and her family — especially her grandkids.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Clayton, her parents, a sister Edith Shipman, and a brother Lewis Morris.
She is survived by her daughter Norma Boss and her husband James L. of Severy; two grandchildren: James L. Boss, Jr. and his wife Vickie of Eureka, and Debi Boss of Amarillo, Texas; three great grandchildren: Mandy, Tyler, and Kayla Boss all of Eureka; 3 brothers: Willard of Winfield, Eugene of Redding, CA, and Chester of Wichita; 2 sisters: Coretta Webster of Howard, and Dorothy Goss of Wichita; a sister-in-law Ruth Morris of Howard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11,2002 at the Severy Baptist Church with Pastor Tony Pameticky officiating. Florene Smith was the organist with Jeleane Benest Osborn singing “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace”. The casket bearers were Dan Howell, Don Morris, Jon Moms, Ken Morris, Randy Morris and Doug Webster. Interment was held at South Lawn Cemetery in Severy. A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
MR. MAURICE HELMICK
WICHITA, Kan. - Maurice H. “Morey” Helmick, 82, formerly of Shell Knob, Mo., retired Southwestern Bell supervisor, passed away on April 26, 2004. His warm, caring spirit and unfailing sense of humor touched many lives.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 3, 2004, at the Cochran Mortuary.
He is survived by sons and daughter-in-laws, Jim Helmick and Lisa Perry, Wichita, Steve Helmick and Becky Brookfield, Denver, Co.; daughters and son-in-laws, Debbie and Edgar Heap of Birds, Oklahoma City, Okla., Erin and Tom Hamby, Maize; an aunt, Gladys Keeny, Sedan, Kan.; cousins, Susan McElroy, Sedan, Curtis Keeny, Wichita and J. D. Bales, Emporia and six grandchildren.
MRS. MARTHENA HELMS
FORT MYERS, FL - Marthena Foster Helms, 84, of Fort Myers, Fla. died June 9, 2003. She had been a resident for five years, formerly of Plant City, Fla.
Mrs. Helms was born Aug. 9, 1918 in Sedan, Kan., the daughter of Roy M. and Zola C. Foster. She was married 55 years to the late L. K. Helms, Jr. of Plant City.
Mrs. Helms received her Bachelor of Science in 1941 from Oklahoma College for Women and finished graduate work at Florida Southern College in Lakewood, Fla. She taught for 20 years in Hilisborough County, Fla. in home economics, exceptional/gifted children and the county’s homebound program. Mrs. Helms was a member of the Plant City Chapter of the Eastern Star and the First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Houghton, and is survived by her son, James Helms, of Fort Myers, Fla. and brother-in-law, Robert Helms, of Plant City, Fla.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, June 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Haught Funeral Home in Plant City, with Chaplain Richard Bills officiating.
The family prefers memorials to Hope Hospice.
MRS. RUBY M. HELVEY
Funeral services for Ruby Merle (Terrel) Helvey of Pauls Valley were scheduled for Monday, August 13, 2001, at 10:00 am, in the Wooster Funeral Home Chapel with Cliff Werhan and John Curtis officiating. Interment was in the Elmore City Cemetery under the direction of the Wooster Funeral Home.
Ruby Helvey was born on December 23, 1908 to William Allen and Myrtle Leona (White) Terrell in Brady, Oklahoma and passed away at the Grady Memorial Hospital in Chickasha, OK on Friday, August 10, 2001, at the age of 92 years.
Mrs. Helvey spent her childhood days in the Garvin County areas of Brady, Wynnewood, Katie, Foster and Elmore City. She attended Elmore City School. Ruby was a Homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She served in 0CC WA for many years and as a volunteer with the Pauls Valley General Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and serving good food to all who entered her door.
Mrs. Helvey is survived by one son and his wife, Terry & June Helvey, Elmore City, two daughters and their husbands, Yvonne & Jerrell McCarty, Sedan, KS and Merlene & Raymond Rust, Rush Springs, OK, seven grandchildren, Karen Davis, Mary All McLemore, Renee Hoover Payton, Rusty Rust, Tammy Filippo, Clay Helvey and Kent Helvey, ten great grandchildren and her God child, Judy McCoy, Catoosa, OK.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W. A. and Myrtle Terrell, her husband, Vernon Helvey, brothers, Ed Terrell, Roy Terrell, Elmer Terrell and George Nile Terrell and her sister, Lois Terrell.
MR. ALFORD HENDERSON
CANEY - Alford Henderson, Age 91, of Caney died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at the Caney Nursing Center.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at the Parcells Family Funeral Home in Caney with Danny Scott officiating. Cremation will follow with private family burial at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze at a later date.
Alford was born Nov. 14, 1914, in Niotaze to William D. and Elizabeth (Dikeman) Henderson. He grew up in the Niotaze area and graduated from the Caney Valley High School in 1935.
On May 2, 1945, Afford married Betty Louise Henderson and made their home in the Niotaze area.
Betty preceded him in death on May 1, 2000.
Alford was a farmer and rancher for many years and also owned and operated a Caterpillar Dozier Company. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Niotaze United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter Susan and husband Robert Beige of Springfield, Mo.; two grandchildren, Andrew Joseph Beige and Sarah Elizabeth Beige of Springfield.
The family has suggested memorials to the Niotaze Little Church Fund and contributions may be left with the Parcells Family Funeral Home in Caney.
MR. ATWELL HENDERSON
Death has again entered our community. Atwell Henderson passed away Thursday night. The funeral was conducted by the Masonic lodge of which he was a member. He leaves a wife, one daughter and several sons to mourn his departure. He was a member of the Woodsman lodge at this place. Atwell Henderson was one of our most prominent and useful citizens and his death is a sad loss to this community. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire community.
MR. CECIL HENDERSON - Submitted by John Henderson
Cecil William Henderson, 80, of Dexter, died on Dec. 26, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter. Born at Wauneta on Aug. 27, 1903, he was the son of Robert Thomas and Laura Provolt Henderson.
He attended Wauneta schools and worked as a young man in oilfields. Henderson began employment with Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1923 and retired from his position as telegrapher in 1970, following 47 years of service.
On April 11, 1923, he was married to Meomia Copple at Independence. The couple lived at Gridley before moving to Dexter in 1941.
Henderson was a member of the Dexter Christian Church, Scottish Rite and Midian Temple and the Order of the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks. He was past member of the Dexter Lodge No. 156, AF&AM, and past patron of Chapter No. 6, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, John, of Hutchinson; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Sandra) Eastman, of Arkansas City; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and four nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Dexter. Interment will be in the Dexter Cemetery under the direction of Miles Memorial Chapel of Winfield. A memorial has been established in his name with the Dexter Christian Church. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.

Eliza J. Henderson, better known as Grandma Henderson, died April 25th at the home of her son-in-law, W. A. Hunt, where she made her home for the past twelve or fourteen years.
Mrs. Henderson was born in Virginia (Tennessee) on August 13th 1883 (1835), making her 80 years, 8 months and 12 days old at the time of her death. She and her husband were among the early settlers of Moor Prairie, where she will be greatly missed especially by the older neighbors. She was a woman of excellent character, of a loving and kind disposition and was loved by all who knew her.

Mrs. Eliza J. Henderson died April 25th at the home of her (grand) son-in-law, W. A. Hunt, with whom she had made her home many years. Her health had been failing the past year. Funeral services were conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon by Rev. J. I. Smallwood, of Sedan and interment made in Evergreen Cemetery at Moore Prairie.
Mrs. Henderson was married (born) in Claybourn (Claiborne) County, Tenn., Aug. 13th 1835. She was married at a early age and came to Kansas with her husband and settled at Moore Prairie. Mrs. Henderson was the mother of four daughters (three) and one (three) son, three of whom survive. Tom Henderson of Wauneta was the only one of the children who could be present at the funeral.
"Grandma Henderson" as she was affectionately known to her friends, was a noble, upright women of the highest type, a affectionate wife and mother, a true friend and neighbor. She will be missed in the community where she lived and was loved for her sterling qualities. Her relatives have sympathy in their loss.

MR. EVERETT HENDERSON, JR.
CHAUTAUQUA, Kan. - Everett Henderson, Jr., 74, of Chautauqua, Kan. died Friday, March 5, 2004, at his home in Chautauqua.
He was born March 31, 1929 to Everett and Thelma Ruth (McKee) Henderson on the family farm northeast of Niotaze and graduated from Peru High School in 1947.
Mr. Henderson served in the United States Army as a corporal and was honorably discharged in 1949.
On June 12, 1951, he married Beulah Lenora Humphrey at Bartlesville, Okla. They were the parents of five children.
Everett was employed at John Weitzel, Inc. in Wichita, Kan. from 1957 until his retirement in 1992. He served as machinist, quality control inspector and as president of the company when he retired.
Following his retirement, Everett and Beulah purchased their home in Chautauqua. They attended New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, where Everett taught Sunday School until the end of December when he became ill and entered the hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah of the home; three sons, Lawrence H. Glisson, Potwin, Kan., Everett E. Henderson, Sedan, Kan. and Stuart L. Henderson, Wichita, Kan.; two daughters, Barbara Henderson Palmer, Fort Worth, Texas, and Judith A. Henderson St. Clair, Pawnee Rock, Kan.; two sisters, Carol Brown, Copan, Okla., and Jean Rayl, Niotaze, Kan.; five grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren and numerous stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services were at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2004, in the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kan., with Rev. Carrol Redwine officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Niotaze, Kan.
The family suggests memorials to the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, contributions may be left with the funeral home.
Services were under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan.
John was born Sept. 9, 1952 in Winfield to Ralph and Neva (Stuher) Henderson. He was raised at Burden on the family farm. John graduated from Burden High School and Wichita University. Music Master. John was a renowned musician, with a complete knowledge and sound of music. John was well known for his music, singing and bass player. John performed on television, radio, concerts, bookings and was a great entertainer. John’s Big Fin band entertained all over. John was known as Hondo in the music world.
John was associated with Miller Music for several years and Gateway computers. John was a great instructor and made learning easy of music and computers.
John was a very kind, understanding and knowledgeable person who was always there to be of help.
Survivors include two sisters, Connie Andes, Winfield, Kan. and Sarah Martin, Lidall, Kan.. two brothers, Jacob (Sonny) Henderson and Ralph Henderson, both of Winfield, Kan. and Brad Reha, his partner in Wichita.
Services will be held Friday, June 21,at 1 p.m. at College Hill United Methodist Church 2930 East 1st, Wichita, Kan. Hillside Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

MRS. LURA HENDERSON DIES
Mrs. Lura Henderson age 68, died Thursday evening, February, 27th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hooper, near Wauneta, with pneumonia and complications. Her daughter was critically ill at the same time with pneumonia and she died two days later.
Funeral services for Mrs. Henderson were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Wauneta, conducted by Rev. E. K. Resler, pastor of the Cedar Vale Methodist church. Interment was in the Moore Prairie cemetery.
Mrs. Henderson is survived by two sons, Cecil Henderson of Gridley, KS and Ralph Henderson, of Tulsa, OK. She has also many other relatives and a wide circle of friends to mourn her loss.

MRS. LURA JANE HENDERSON - Submitted by John Henderson
Lura Jane Provolt was born April 15, 1869 in Iowa and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hooper of Wauneta, Ks., February 27, 1936, at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 12 days. She came to Kansas with her parents when nine years of age and grew to womanhood through the early pioneer days of Kansas. She was united in marriage to Thomas R. Henderson on April 26, 1891. To this union, one daughter and two sons were born, Mrs. C. M. Hooper of Wauneta; R. R. Henderson of Tulsa; and C. W. Henderson of Gridley. The two sons survive, the daughter having followed the mother in death on February 29, 1936. Funeral services for Mrs. Henderson were held at the M. E. church in Wauneta Saturday afternoon, February 29, by Rev. E. K. Resler, the pastor. Burial was in the Moore Prairie cemetery beside her husband.

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER DIE
Our community was grief stricken by the deaths of Mrs. Lura Henderson and daughter, Mrs. Ruby Hooper last week. Both became bedfast on Sunday, Mrs. Henderson dying the following Thursday night and Mrs. Hooper on Saturday morning.
Not only the family will feel the great loss in their going, but the entire community mourn the passing of this mother and daughter, who in life had never been separated and in death only by a few hours. Both were kind and loving mothers. Their first thoughts were always of their families and homes. Both were ardent workers in the church, Sunday school and the Ladies Aid. Their friends were numbered by their acquaintances. Friends and neighbors unite with the family and other relatives in this great sorrow.

MOTHER, DAUGHTER DEAD OF PNEUMONIA WITHIN 72 HOURS
Cedar Vale, Kas. Feb. 29 (Special)
Mrs. Lura Henderson, 66 and her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hooper, 40 (36) years old, residents of the country near Wauneta for many years, died within 72 hours of each other, both as the result of pneumonia. Mrs. Henderson, a widow died Thursday night at the daughters home, her daughter died early Saturday after a two-day illness.
Mrs. Henderson is survived by two sons, Ralph, Tulsa and Cecil, Gridley, Ks. Her funeral was held Saturday afternoon in Wauneta, with burial in the Moore Prairie cemetery.
Mrs. Hooper is survived by her husband and three sons. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the home with burial in the Round Mound cemetery.

MRS. MEOMIA HENDERSON - Submitted by John Henderson
Meomia Alma Henderson, 84, of Arkansas, died Feb 1, at the Presbyterian Manor. Born at Sedan on Oct. 14, 1904, she was the daughter of John and Lena Downs Copple. After graduation from Sedan High School in 1922, she attended normal school and taught in Chautauqua County for a year.
On April 11, 1923, she married Cecil W. Henderson at Independence, and they lived in the Gridley, Kan. area. In 1941, they moved to the Dexter area, and Mrs. Henderson later worked at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Dexter until her retirement. Henderson preceded her in death in 1983, and she moved to Arkansas City in 1984.
Mrs. Henderson was a former member of the Dexter Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school and played the organ, and a member of the Bible Christian Church, Arkansas City. She was a 50-year member of the Dexter Order of the Eastern Star and the Winfield Beauceant.
Survivors include her son John Henderson, Hutchinson; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Sandra) Eastman, Arkansas City; three sisters, Muriel Murrell, Longwood, Fla.; Menifee Cullen, Arlington, Va. Marjorie Fairley, Yale, Ok.; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

MRS. RACHEL HENDERSON
Rachel Jane Brewer was born Oct. 6, 1851 near Terre Haute, Indiana. Departed this life Sept 26, 1927, age 75 years, 11 months and 20 days.
She was married to Atwill Henderson Aug 29th 1866. In 1867 they came to Kansas and took a claim to Chautauqua county and bought a claim near Monett. In 1822 they moved to the present home two miles north of Niotaze having resided there 45 years and in Chautauqua county 56 years. To the union were born 10 children, four of whom survive. The husband Atwill Henderson, preceded her 29 years, also six children John Chester, James Russell, Jasper Franklin, Nora Windom, Ealin Austin and Mary C. Barnhart.
Mrs. Henderson was a kind and devoted mother. She was highly esteemed by those who knew her, for her patient, kind and contented disposition. She was united with the M. E church in early life and has lived a faithful life since.
There are left to mourn her demise, four sons, Jesse Alexander, William David, Alva A. and Everett all of Niotaze. 34 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

John H. Crowe officiating, assisted by Rev. Homer Gaines. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery, with the Coulter funeral home in charge. Henderson died Sunday night at his home.

The funeral of T. R. Henderson, for many years a resident of Wauneta and agent of the Missouri Pacific railroad at that place was held Wednesday and the remains were buried at Moore (Prairie) cemetery.
Mr. Henderson had been in failing health for some time and his death occurred in Colorado (Colorado Springs) where he had gone in the hopes of being benefited.

T. R. HENDERSON GETS PACIFIC PASS FOR 22 YEARS OF SERVICE
T. R. Henderson the well known and very popular agent for the Missouri Pacific at Wauneta, has received from the company an annual pass for himself and Mrs. Henderson, good over the Southern Kansas Division. It represents twenty-two years of continuous service for the company at Wauneta.
Mr. Henderson is a capable, obliging agent as all the people around Wauneta will attest. In a letter to The Times Star Mr. Henderson says: I am enclosing money order for $4.00 to extend my subscription to The Times Star, the best county paper in the state. I have been a subscriber for about twenty years.
"By the way Mr. Jarvis is not the only agent in the county for the Missouri Pacific who holds annual transportation. I have one for myself and wife over the division given for twenty years service. I commenced work for the Pacific (the best employer on earth) July 10, 1890, as agent at this station and have been here continuously since, almost twenty- two years. MRS. VIRGINIA HENDRICKS
Virginia Lee Cating was born near West Lebanon, Indiana, March 15, 1847, died Sept. 18, 1929, aged 82 years, six months, three days. She was married to L. T. Hendricks, April 7, 1864, at West Lebanon, Indiana, and came to Kansas in 1868, settling in Ottawa, moving in the spring of 1871 to Chautauqua county, near Cloverdale, coming to the farm near Sedan in 1905.
Mrs. Hendricks died April 4, 1920. Three children have preceded her in death. Leaving to mourn her loss, Mrs. Lulu H. Searl, Bernard and Chris Hendricks, all at home, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Annie Neptune, Sycamore, Kansas, is the only surviving member of her family, besides a number of nephews and nieces. She and her husband were pioneers who by their labors and sacrifices have made Kansas what it is today. Loving mother and sister, faithful friend and neighbor, we bid thee farewell, with the hope of meeting you on the other shore.
Funeral was conducted at the Westlake Undertaking Parlor Friday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev., J. W. Campbell, pastor of Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery.
MRS. ETHEL M. HENNING
ARKANSAS CITY - Ethel Mae Henning, 90, of Arkansas City, Kan., died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at the Medicalodge East Health Care Center. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial followed at the Gueda Springs Cemetery.
Ethel was born May 26, 1915 in Sedan, Kan. to Benjamin E. and Edith B. (Graham) Davis. She was raised and educated in Sedan. She married Sylvester Albert Henning on Oct. 6, 1934 in Wichita, Kan. The couple made their home in Wichita for 12 years before moving to Gueda Springs. They moved to Arkansas City in 1985.
Ethel was a homemaker while her husband worked at Boeing. She was a member of the Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church and the Kansas Mayflower Society.
Survivors include two sons, Joe and his wife, Carol, San Antonio, Texas; John and his wife, Amanda, Gueda Springs; two daughters, Wanda and her husband, Bill Goodson, LaPlace, La., and Jean and her husband, Vern Clements, Naicrest, Fla.; one sister, Virginia Lawrence, Wagoner, Okla., nine grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1990, two brothers, Earl and Guy Davis, and two sisters, Letha Manley and Dorothy Wade.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer’s and Similar Disease Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements were made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.
MR. CHARLES HENSON
SEDAN, Kan. - Charles Junior Henson, 80, of Sedan, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.
He was born Aug. 17, 1924 at Sedan to Charles Louis and Eva Marie (Hurt) Henson. He spent most of his childhood in Chautauqua County, where he began his education. Later he moved to Colorado with his family, where he completed his education, before returning to the Sedan area with his family.
In December 1943, he joined the U.S. Army, serving during World War II until receiving his honorable discharge in April 1946.
On June 19, 1946 he married Nola Beck at Howard, Kan. Following their marriage, they made their home in Sedan for a short time until moving to Kansas City, where he was a supervisor at Englander Mattress Co. for many years. He later became a Welder at Trailmobile in Kansas City, until retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, they returned to Sedan.
Mr. Henson was a member of the First Christian Church in Sedan.
Survivors include his wife, Nola of the home; one son, Larry Henson, Olathe, Kan.; one brother, Louis Henson, Sedan, Kan.; two sisters, Barbara Lewis, Dixon, Mo, and Viola Ellis, Pawhuska, Okla.; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Henson and one sister, Velma Taylor.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, in the First Christian Church in Sedan, with Rev. Penny Goldberg officiating.
Cremation has taken place and friends may sign the register book on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
The family suggests memorials to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and contributions may be left at the funeral home.

MR. LEROY C. HENSON
OCHELATA, Okla. - Mr. LeRoy Calvin Henson, 72, died Thursday evening at his home in Ochelata.
Funeral services was held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 24, 2004, in the New Harmony Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Cox and Rev. Leroy Looper officiating. Interment was in the Ochelata Cemetery. Funeral services and interment was directed by the Stumpif Funeral Home.

LeRoy Calvin Henson was born on July 13, 1931 at Blue Mound, Kan., the son of Charles L. and Marie (Hurt) Henson. He was raised in the Sedan, Kan. and Copperspur, Colo. areas. He married Shirley Barger on Sept. 24, 1949 at North Kansas City, Mo. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. After his military service, he worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Chautauqua County, Kan. and as night Marshall of Sedan, Kan. He spent most of his adult life working on ranches. He worked for the Guinn Ranch for over 30 years and the Short Ranch for many years. He was one of the “Last Real Cowboys.” He was a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church.
LeRoy is survived by his wife, Shirley, of the home, one son, Calvin Henson and his wife, Tammy, Bartlesville, OK; one daughter; Peg Blickensderfer and her husband, John, Owasso, OK; two brothers, Charles and Louis Henson, both of Sedan, Kan.; two sisters; Barbara Lewis, Dixon, Mo. and Viola Ellis, Pawhuska,OK; three grandchildren; Alera Henson, Mike Henson and Faith Blickensderfer. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Velma Taylor.
W. A. Henson Passed Away Sunday
Well Known Civil War Veteran Was For Many Years a Resident of Sedan.
W. A. Henson, well known early settler of Chautauqua county and for many years a resident of Sedan died at his home here last Sunday, Nov. 22. He had not been feeling as well as usual for a few days previous. While eating dinner Sunday he was seized with what was apparently a paralytic stroke. He was assisted to bed and rapidly sank to the end.
Funeral services were held at the Buckles undertaking parlor Tuesday afternoon at 2:80, conducted by the Rev. G. L. Eslick. pastor of the Christian church at Caney. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. A firing squad and officers of the Doy Moore Post American Legion conducted the burial service of that organization at the grave.
William A. Henson was the oldest son of Philip H. Henson and Nancy Henson. He was born December 6, 1842, in Shelby county, Illinois. In 1852 he moved with his parents to Washington county, Arkansas; then moved in 1855 to Wright county, Missouri. He lived there until 1859, then again moved to Fort Scott, Kansas. He enlisted in Company E. 14th Kansas Cavalry in 1863. He was enrolled in the 7th Army Corps, second division, June 25, 1863. He was in the hospital three times, at Fort Gibson, Fort Smith and Fort Scott, Kansas. He was discharged on June 25, 1865 at Fort Gibson.
He was united in marriage to Emma Walker on January 4, 1871, at Murdock, Mo. To this union six children were born, two sons and four daughters. His wife and two sons preceded him to the grave. Those left to sorrow because of his going are his four daughters, Mrs. Nora Miller of Sedan; Mrs. Minnie Stansberry of Byers, Kansas; Mrs. Pearl Ferguson of Long Beach, California, and Mrs. Clara Black of Nowata, Okla.; eighteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Mac Henson of Spokane, Washington Jim and George of Sedan, one sister, Martha Dutton of California and relatives and a host of friends.
MRS. NEVA L. HERRINGTON
Neva Lucille Herrington, age 87, of Arkansas City. Kansas, formerly of Dexter, KS. died Friday. November 17, 2000 at the William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services were scheduled for Monday November 20th, at the Dexter Christian Church. Burial was held in the Dexter Cemetery. Pastor Norman Reeves officiated.
Neva was born September 15. 1913 in the Otto, Kansas area to Britton and Nellie V. (Stark) Head. She was reared and educated in Maple City and Cedar Vale, She attended Cedar Vale schools.
Neva married Clarence B. Allen on February 23, 1932 at Newkirk, OK. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1970. Neva later married Calvin Herrington on December 23, 1986 at Perry, OK. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Neva worked as a Teller for the Farmer’s and Merchants State Bank of Dexter for twenty years, retiring in 1978. She then went to work for the State Bank of Winfield for another six years. Neva was a very active member of the Dexter Christian Church, where she served as the Secretary for many years. She also served as the Secretary for the Dexter School Board for several years as well. Neva was a longtime member of the Dexter Chapter #6 O.E.S. and the Arkansas City Victory Chapter O.E.S.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsy Owen, two sisters, Viola Pickering and Laura Phelps, all of Arkansas City, three grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, two brothers and one sister.
A memorial has been established with Hospice, Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Charles V. Hess was born June 30, 1863, and died April 3, 1948. He is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Anna Hess, one daughter Mrs. Hazel Jones, Denver, Colo., one son Carl,
Englewood Calif., one step daughter Mrs. Maude Scott, Pittsburg, one brother John Hess
of New Castel, Colo., and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Thompson, Sparks, Okla.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Baird Chapel with the Rev. Joe Lane officiating. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
Harold Hess, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Hess, who live about four miles north of Cedar Vale, accidentally shot and killed himself while hunting Saturday afternoon.
Harold was hunting alone. When he did not return Saturday night, his family instituted a search, but could not find him. A neighborhood search was then instituted, and about 9 o’clock Saturday night the body was found at the foot of a cliff near a ravine about a quarter of a mile from the Hess home.
Death evidently was instantaneous, as the charge from the shotgun entered the upper part of the shoulders and neck from the front.
He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Lucille and Barbara Jean; and one brother Donald.
MRS. WANDA M. HESSERT
BARTLESVILLE - Mrs. Wanda M. Hessert, 77, of Bartlesville, Okla. died at 8:41 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville.
Memorial services for Mrs. Hessert will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2006, at the First Wesleyan Church in Bartlesville, with Pastor Joe Colaw officiating. Memorial services and cremation are under the direction of the Stumpif Funeral Home & Crematory in Bartlesville.
A memorial has been established for Youth Programs at the First Wesleyan Church and may be sent to the First Wesleyan Church, 1776 Silver Lake Road, Bartlesville, OK 74006.
Mrs. Hessert was born on Nov. 14, 1928 near Chautauqua, Kan. to Earl and Ava (Fine) Huckstep. She grew up and received her education in the Chautauqua, Sedan, and Peru areas. She was married to Edward C. Hessert Jr. on June 30, 1945 in Chautauqua County. They made their home in Chautauqua and Mrs. Hessert had been employed as the office manager for the Taylor Medical Clinic in Sedan until her retirement. Mr. Hessert preceded her in death in March of 1994 and she moved to Bartlesville to make her home near her son. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Bartlesville.
Survivors include two sons, James E. Hessert and his wife, Sharon, Bartlesville, Okla. and Charles E. Hessert and his wife, Ruth Ann, Sedan, Kan., one sister, Betty Swinney, Dewey, Okla., three grandchildren, Michael James Hessert, Stacy Dawn Hessert, and Jamie Lynn Reagan, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Novella Keough.
MR. JON CARL HILL
Emporia native and former Sedan Times-Star editor Jon Carl Hill of Topeka died Monday, May 21, 2007, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was 50.
Mr. Hill was the editor of several Kansas newspapers, including the Fredonia Daily Herald, the Sedan Times-Star and the Topeka Metro News. He was public relations director and lobbyist for the Kansas Motor Carriers Association and editor and publisher of Mid-America Transporter magazine. He also worked as an adult education instructor for Let’s Help in Topeka.
Earlier, he was a Washington D.C. intern for Congressman Joe Skubitz and staff intern for three sessions with State Representative James Lowther.
The son of Charles and Lischia Newcomer Hill, he was born June 6, 1956, in Emporia. He graduated from Emporia High School and Emporia State University with a degree in political science and journalism.
He married Vanessa Matzke on June 13, 1981. She survives.
Mr. Hill was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church and the vestry in Topeka. He was a member of the Lions Club, Masonic Temple, president of the Mental Health Association of Lyon County, city council member and volunteer firefighter for the city of Sedan and board member of the Emporia State University Endowment Association. He also played Santa Claus for several years in Emporia.
Other survivors include his children, Morgan Hill and Grant Hill, both of Topeka; his father of Austin, Texas; one brother, Marty Hill of Emporia; one sister, Lise Hill of Emporia; his grandmother, Irma Hill of Emporia; and two grandchildren.
His mother and grandparents, John Albert Hill and Ted and Ethel Newcomer, died earlier.
Cremation has taken place with Midwest Cremation Seocity.
MRS. ETHEL M. HILL
CEDAR VALE, Kan - Ethel Mae Hill, age 92, of Cedar Vale, Kan. died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at the South Central regional medical center in Arkansas City, Kan.
She was born Feb. 9, 1911 at Adair, Okla. Her parents were Ernest and Bessie (Davis) Calvert. She was raised and educated in the Adair area.
She married Homer McDaniel in 1937 and they settled in Cedar Vale in 1943-1964. She then moved to Adair, Okla. in 1965 to care for her mother, Bessie. She met and married Ted Hill in 1969 and they moved back to Cedar Vale that year. He preceded her in death.
She was a housewife, but had many jobs in and ouiside of the home. She had done seamstress and upholstery work fran her home. She had helped work and manage Homer’s Western Wear and Saddle Shop and Herb & Hazel’s Burger Bar. While she was in Oklahoma caring for her mother, she ran a retail package store for the family.
She was member of the Old Time Pickers Club, loved to dance, play bingo and cards and was an avid fisher woman. She is survived by sons, Jim McDaniel, Arkansas City, Kan., Larry Hill, Sand Springs, Okla., three granddaughters, five great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter, Jackie, two brothers and three sisters.
Services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home. Interment well be in the Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be sent to Alzheimer and related diseases.
MRS. FREDA N. HILL
PONCA CITY, Okla. - Freda Nadine Hill, 61, of Ponca City, Okla. died Friday at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Services were held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Osage Heights Baptist Church and burial was at 2:30 p.m. in Boulanger Cemetery in Boulanger, Okla. Services were under the direction of Trout Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hill was born Sept. 17, 1943 in Columbus, Kan. to Elery D. and Nita (Wells) Joy. She graduated from Sedan High School in Sedan, Kan. in 1961.
On Sept. 15, 1962 in Sedan, she married Carrol Hill and they moved to Ponca City in 1976, where she worked at Skaggs Alpha Beta and as a nurses aide in outpatient surgery. She was a member of the Osage Height Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Doug, Roger and Kyle, all of Ponca City, Okla., her father, Elery Joy, Sedan, Kan. and a sister, Patricia Bench, Kansas and nine grandchildren.
MRS. ANNIE-TOBIAS HILLS - Submitted by Dixie Painter
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie-Tobias Hills, a resident of Cedar Vale and community for practically all her life, will be held at the Cedar Vale Baptist church this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock conducted by Rev. Winter Green, of Cedar Vale. Interment will be in the Cedar Vale cemetery.
Mrs. Hills passed away at 10:40 Wednesday morning after a long period of ill health followed by a stroke Saturday. Surviving are two sons, A. J. Tobias of Cedar Vale and James Tobias of Cedar Vale.
MR. LEON C. HILLS
SEDAN, Kan. - Leon C. “Pucket” Hills, D.D.S., 79, of Sedan died Wednesday morning, May 12, 2004, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.
He was born Aug. 9, 1924 at Highland, Kan. to Louis Blish and Ruth Arrah (Brown) Hills. He began his elementary education in Highland, when he was in the second grade, he moved with his family to Troy, Kan., where he completed his elementary and secondary education, graduating from Troy High School in 1942. Following high school, he attended Highland Junior College and Kansas State University.
He was a veteran of World War II, joining the U.S. Marine Corp in 1944, he was in the group of Marines that landed and fought at Iwo Jima in 1945. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1946.
After receiving his discharge from the Marine Corp, he continued his education at Lakeland, Fla. In 1948, he began Pharmacy School at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, receiving his Pharmacy degree in 1952. He then began Dental school, receiving his Doctorate in Dental Science from the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 1957.
On Oct. 17, 1952, he married Jane Moderhak at Leavenworth, Kan. In June of 1957, they moved to Sedan, and in August 1957 Pucket opened his dental practice. He continued his practice until suffering a stroke in 1977.
Pucket was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church, served on the Vestry at his church, was a longtime member of the Sedan Lions Club, Sedan Chamber of Commerce, Sedan Country Club, was a member of the Chautauqua County Fair Board for 20 years, serving as president for 10 years, and the Southeast Kansas Dental Society. He was an active community leader for many years and was instrumental in building the bowling alley and Pleasant Valley Manor.
Survivors include his wife, Jane, of the home; three sons and their wives, Scott and Mary Ann Hills, Sedan, Kan., Tim and Cynthia Hills, Sedan, Kan. and Blish and Diane Hills, Elk River, MN; one daughter and her husband, Sally and Bryon Newton, rural Caney; and 10 Grandchildren, Allyson Hills, Jordan Hills, Lauren Hills, Brittany Hills and Timory Hills all of Sedan, Nicholas and Abby Newton, rural Caney, Alec Hills, Blake Hills and Elise Hills, all of Elk River, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Blish Hills, and one sister Bette Lou Holt.
Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2004, at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan with The Rev. Barbara K. Bloxsom officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

Hattie L. Burden was born in Indiana Feb 24, 1877 and departed this life Sept. 29, 1928 at the age of 51 years, seven month and seven days.
She was married to Albert B. Hite March 13, 1895. To this union were born six children, all of whom are living and were at the mother's bedside during her illness. The two daughters are Mrs. Zelma Martin, of Hewins and Mrs. Alta Moore of Cedar Vale, four sons, William C., of Cedar Vale, Dallas of Barnsdall, Daniel B, of Coffeyville and Herman L., of Cedar Vale.
She leaves to mourn their loss her husband, six children, seven grandchildren and sisters, Mrs. C. A. Brenner of Colorado Springs, Mrs. Nannie Casebolt of Cedar Vale and one brother J. H. Burden of Wauneta, her stepmother, Mrs. M. W. Burden of Cedar Vale, five half sisters, Mrs. Jake Morgan of Granada, Colo., Mrs. Carl Appleby, Mrs. Helen Tipton and Esther Burden of Cedar Vale and Olive Burden, of Arkansas City, two half brothers, Ray Burden of Sedan and Fred Burden of Kansas City.
Funeral services were conducted at te Methodist church at 2 o'clock p.m. Sunday by Rev. Chaphill. Internment in the Mound Round Memorial cemetery.
MR. HERMAN L. HITE
CEDAR VALE, Kan. - Herman Leo Hite, 92, of Cedar Vale died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 in Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be held Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch will officiate. Burial will be at the Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 12 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale. Memorials have been established with the Cedar Vale Community Hospital and the First Baptist Church of Cedar Vale.
Hite was born on Oct. 28, 1911 to Albert B. and Hattie L. (Burden) Hite in Cedar Vale.
He was married to Nellie M. (Mattox) Scott on June 4, 1942. He lived in Cedar Vale all his life and was in the livestock and farming business.
He was a member of the Baptist Church in Cedar Vale and a member of the Chautauqua Masonic Lodge #355. He entered the Masonic Lodge as a young man and had been Master and received his 50-year Pin in 1987.
His survivors include wife Nellie of the home; a son, J. D. Hite and wife Karen of Udall; a daughter, Coena Foster of Wichita; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Herman was proceeded in death by his parents and brothers, William, Dallas and Dan; two sisters, Alta Moore and Zelma Martin.
