KATHERENA B. JONES - Submitted by Joe Ferguson (801-756-4452)

TRICK, [or TRICY or TRIIK] Katherena Barbara (Mrs. Thomas Morgan Jones).
Died Aug 6, 1917. Buried at Monett Cemetery August 7, 1917. Born in Wurtenburg, Germany July 14, 1838 and came to U.S. when 14. When near 19, married John Robenstein to whom seven children were born. Three have preceded her in death. Two sons, George and Jacob not heard from. Two daughters, Mrs. Emma Glockle, of Havana and Mrs. Carrie McDaniel of Hills Dale, KS. Her second marriage was to T. M. Jones, who survives her. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Dikeman, of Niotaze. Those from a distance were her grandaughter, Mrs. I.E. [Dora Mae Jones Peisker] Dikeman, husband and little son of Sedan, KS and Mrs. Hannah [Peisker] Clark and son of Independence.

[Note: Dora Mae and Hannah were not granddaughters of Katharena. They were apparently adopted or at least raised by the Jonses from the time of the deaths of their parents until their marriages. According to Dale Dikeman, his mother Dora Mae was raised by Bessie Dikeman, daughter of Thomas M. and K. Barbara Jones. This probably accounts for Hannah and Dora being referred to as granddaughters of K. Barbara]

MR. THOMAS M. JONES

His wife, Kathrena Barbara Jones, preceeded him to the Great Beyond August 6th, 1917. “Grandpa Jones,” as he was generally called, was a firm believer in the Golden Rule (Even as thou wouldst others do unto you; do ye also unto them), and stood always ready and willing with helping hands to render any service possible to those in sickness or distress, until he lost his eye-sight about ten years ago. This unselfish spirit has won for him a great multitude of friends and loved ones who have risen to call his name blessed.

He leaves to mourn his departure, one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Dikeman, and family, of Niotaze, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Glockle of Sawtelie, Calif.; Mrs. Carrie McDaniel of Hillsdale, Kans.; two brothers, Mr. E. F. Jones, postpmaster of Jarvis, Ontario, Canada, and Mr. J. L. Jones of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and numerous grandchildren and great grand children and other relatives and a host of friends.

The deceased was county commission with John Lee and John Doshbaugh, and was trustee. He was always interested in the topics of the day. In an early day while in Labette county, Mr. Jones would have stayed at the notorious “Bender” house where so many were killed, had not a friend invited him to stay at his home.

Mr. Jones fell on December 25th, a year ago, and has been unable to walk since. From that time he has been carefully nursed by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dikeman and family assisted by loving friends.

MR. W. M. JONES - Submitted by Freida Wells

William Morris Jones second son of Morris E. and Margaret Williams Jones was born in Carnarvon County, Wales, January 12, 1862 and came to Champaign County, Illinois with his parents when he was four years of age. As he grew up he turned his attention to agriculture as he was also a teacher.
In 1883 he came to Grant Co. this state and took a claim and while living there was a teacher in the public schools. In some way Mr. Jones' attention was called to the resourceful and pretty valley in which Cedar Vale is located and moved here in 1889 and established the Cedar Vale Commerical, which was one of Chautauqua County's successful papers. In 1902 he sold the plant and decided to enter the mercantile business, and became a partner of the late Rece Lewelyn in a hardware, implement and undertaking store.
Two years later when The L. C. Adam Mercantile company was incorporated, Mr. Jones became one it its heaviest stockholders, a director and secretary of this institution. He was also a director and stockholder in The Cedar Vale National Bank. In many other interests in which the community would be benefited, Mr. Jones was a willing supporter. He was not a plunger, nor of a greedy, grasping nature in his dealings with others, but was always considerate of the other fellow's welfare.
For more than a year the deceased was in failing health and was a patient in a Winfield hospital for several months. He left Winfield for Phoenix, Arizona November 15, accompanied by Mrs. Jones and A. C. Burdette hoping the warm dry climate might relieve him of his intense pain, but he suffered a stroke an paralysis December 18, which hastened his death, which occurred at the St. Joseph hospital Thursday morning at 7:00 o'clock December 21, 1922.
The body was accompanied home by Mrs. Jones and son Beamer, the latter arriving in Phoenix an hour after his father passed away.

MISS HILDA M. JULIAN

MOLINE - Hilda May Julian passed away on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at her home in Moline. She was 90 years of age. Hilda was born on April 25, 1914, on a farm near Sedan to Joseph and Flora (Jeanneret) Julian. At a young age, Hilda moved with her family to the 400 acre farm of her grandparents, Paul and Rosalie Jeanneret, south of Moline.

She graduated from Moline High School in 1931, and later graduated from Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg in 1941, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Hilda taught several years at rural schools in Elk and Chautauqua counties. During World War II, she served with the Womans Army Corps and was assigned to duty at the Pentagon. She was later employed as a librarian in a public library at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and lived in Hollywood, Calif. during the 1950s. Hilda returned to make her home in the Moline community during her later years.

Since Hildas mother and grandparents were all of French descent, the family spoke French and Hilda became fluent in this language. She was very knowledgeable about her familys history and provided valuable genealogy information during the last few years.

She is survived by numerous cousins and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Julian, Denver, Co.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Paul Henry Julian and Elmer Joseph Julian and a sister, Iva Hope Julian.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at Ames Chapel Cemetery south of Moline with Lloyd 0. Zimmerman officiating.

A memorial has been established with the Moline Senior Center. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.
