MR. GEORGE W. LAYTON - Submitted by Charlie Frye
George W. Layton, at his home near Hewins.
Tuesday, October 10, of hernia.
In this death we lose another one of the old settlers of the country and one
whom, through long acquaintance, everyone had come to honor and respect: we
had come almost to love him, he had borne up so long under so much of
discouragement, and had always, even when bent under the heaviest of
burdens, proven true and upright, sturdy in manly honesty: his kindly
disposition and homely friendliness warming many a heart to him - he was such
a good soul. Could everyone who will feel a true sorrow at his passing add
but one stone to a monument at his grave, it would be a conspicuous landmark
to all the country around.
"Uncle George" came here in the fall of 1870, taking as a claim the farm upon which he has since lived and died. He died as he had lived - at work--almost with the harness on. The threshers had been there on Monday and he had made a hand, as he always did, at putting away his wheat crop. The exertion was too great for his failing strength, for he was waxing old, and an hernia of long standing broke him down. Physicians were called and did all that could be done, but on Tuesday he passed away. An invalid wife, the loved partner of his life, and a large family of children mourn his loss.
Cedar Vale Commercial - October 14, 1893
It is with regret that we are called upon to chronicle the sudden death of Geo. Layton of near Ozro who departed this life on Tuesday after suffering intensely for about 12 hours with strangulated hernia. Mr. Layton was in his usual health on Monday and was at work hauling wheat from the thresher to the granary when the unfortunate rupture occurred. He was taken to the house and Drs. Whitney and Baldwin were summoned. They saw as soon as they arrived that his chances of recovery were very slim, but a surgical operation was performed as it was Mr. Layton's urgent request. The deceased leaves a wife and 5 children to mourn his loss.
