We can hardly bear to think of it that way,
Only a few days, it seems but yesterday,
A wee little bundle with eyes, nose and ears,
Came to stay with us, we thought for years.

We watched over her and gave her all our love,
Just like our Father in the Heaven above.
And prayed that he who shared our joys and tears
Ever guide your footsteps in the following years.

God gave you, God took you, God keep you
But we know, though we had to give you,
So sweet, so innocent, with all your charms,
Though your little life is ended,
You rest safe in His arms.

MRS. PEGGY MURRAY

Peggy Eleanor Murray passed away on April 27, 2002 at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, Kansas. She was 75 years of age, a former resident of Wichita, and was a resident of Eureka Medicalodge during the last four years. Peggy was born on December 12, 1926 in Emporia to Clifford Robert and Lena Faye (Smith) Graves. She spent her early childhood between St. Joseph, MO and Emporia. Her father, a mechanic, had lost his business during the Great Depression years but finally settled his family in Anthony, Kansas. Peggy grew to be a young women in Anthony, graduating from Anthony High School in 1945. After graduation, Peggy worked as a clerk in the jewelry store in Anthony.

At the end of World War II, when the soldiers came home, Peggy met Eugene Ross Murray. Gene had grown up in Harper, Kansas, a town near Anthony. Peggy and Gene were united in marriage on July 27, 1948 at the Christian Church in Anthony. Gene was completing his college education at Wichita State University, so they moved to Wichita. After graduation, Gene found employment with the Internal Revenue Service in Wichita, where Peggy and Gene made their home. Their daughter, Roslyn, was born on March 30, 1950.

Like many young homemakers of her time, Peggy was very active in community organizations. Peggy spent several years as president of her local PTA, supervising carnivals and dollar day lunches to raise funds for school improvements. She took classes through the EHU to improve her creative skills and volunteered through this organization with nursing home visits, clothing drives and making cancer bandages. She enjoyed the fellowship of the United Methodist Women and spent many summers involved in Bible School.

Peggy was an excellent seamstress. She made clothing for everyone in the family from flannel shirts to play clothes, to fancy dance costumes, prom dresses, Roslyn's wedding dress and clothes for her granddaughter’s dolls. During her middle age years, a group evolved informally known first as the birthday club, later known as the sewing club. This group was comprised of some of Peggy’s dearest friends, gathered from the other organizations to which she belonged. These women had formed their own support group long before this term was fashionable. They shared the joys and sorrows of their lives in between the sewing.

Peggy’s mate and best friend, Gene, was always at her side. Somehow all the projects that Peggy became involved in would also become Gene’s projects too, with one simple quote from Peggy, “Oh, Gene will do it.” Whether it was a school carnival, EHU flower display, or a church rummage sale, “Oh, Gene will do it.” If Gene made something special for Peggy in his workshop, it sometimes turned into several special things so the club girls could have one, too. Peggy was right, "Gene will do it.”

Peggy was baptized as a young girl into the Christian Church at Emporia. Peggy and Gene were members of the University United Methodist Church for many years, giving their support to building up that young church. In her elder years. Peggy participated in a weekly bible study group. Peggy was a woman full of quiet strength. She drew this strength from her faith and she used this strength to uphold, nurture and guide her family.

Peggy thoroughly enjoyed her granddaughters, Kristen and Kelly. She loved sewing for them and school shopping together was an annual event. From the time the girls were very small, they always spent a week with Grandma each summer. It was a time for sharing. Everyone in the family remembers Peggy going about her daily work softly singing or humming. Peggy was a happy person and she shared this happiness with her family and friends.

Around 1990, Peggy developed the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Peggy fought hard against this disease, even when she didn’t really understand what was happening to her. Even though this disease robbed the health from her body and her mind, the true spirit of Peggy endured. You would find her softly singing or whispering to herself and smiling at her caregivers. Even in this diminished state, Peggy still shared her happiness with others and made friends. Many of her caregivers would visit the hospital and simply state, “I am Peggy’s friend.” We have mourned the loss of Peggy in our daily lives for many years. Now we rejoice in the freedom of her spirit and the wholeness of her soul.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene, Wichita, KS, her daughter and son-in-law, Roslyn and Paul Stewart, Howard, KS, a brother, Robert Graves, Tyler, TX and her granddaughters, Kristen Stewart, Edgerton and Kelly Stewart, Pittsburg.

Funeral services wee held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the Antioch Christian Church in Wichita, with Pastor John King officiating. Mary King provided an instrumental selection of Amazing Grace and a vocal selection of The Lord’s Prayer. Lloyd G. Zimmerman gave a eulogy. The casket bearers were Michael Bunch, Larry Eklund, Michael McFerren, Fred Shepherd, Terry Smith and Paul Stewart. Interment was held at Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita. A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer’s Association, Sunflower Chapter. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
