Mrs. Doug Nance died very suddenly Monday morning at her home at 2:30 with heart failure.
Aunt Jane, as she was commonly called had, lived here many years and was liked by all who knew her. She was 76 years old the 3rd day of May.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church Thursday morning at 10:30. Our little town extends heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.
Mrs. Emma Stafford and daughter, Benita and son Gerald and sister, Mrs. Mattie Reynolds and daughter of Fort Scott came Monday in response to a telegram that their mother and grandmother Mrs. Doug Nance had passed away.
MR. CHARLES H. NATION
WINFIELD — Charles H. Nation, 74, of Winfield, Kan., died Tuesday, March 4, 2003.
He was born July 1, 1928 in Wann, Okla., to William Reed and Addie (Palone) Nation.
He was raised and educated in Peru. He graduated from Peru High School and Independence Junior College and attended the University of Kansas.
He had been in the oil business all of his adult life. He worked in the oil business in Peru, Dewey, Okla., Great Bend and Winfield, Kan. He was co-owner of Petroleum Enterprises in Winfield. He had worked for J.A.S. Oil Company and was presently working for Phillips Oil Properties, Inc. of Wichita, Kan.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winfield. He married Lenora Loftin in Peru, Kan. May 29, 1949, and they would have celebrated their 54th anniversary in May.
Survivors include his wife, Lenora, of the home, three sons and daughter-in-laws; Alan and Judy Nation, Winfield, Paul and Debbie Nation, Ottawa, Kan., and Gary and Jana Nation, Eustus, Neb., eight grandchildren, Andrew, Trevor, Michael, Dominic, Tony, Cory, Toby and Taylor Nation and one great grandson, Hunter Nation.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery in Winfield.
A memorial has been established and donations may be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Winfield in his name.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of the services.
On March 28, 1936, he was united in marriage to Betty Wasson in Independence, Kan. He worked for Republic Oil & Refining and later Shell Oil. In 1944, he entered the U. S. Navy and was stationed at Clearfield Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield, Utah. He was discharged in 1946. He worked for Cooperative Refining Association in Great Bend, Kan. until 1962, when they moved to Winfield. Nation then founded Petroleum Enterprise, Inc. and later retired in 1986.
He was a member of the Winfield Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Post #10. He served on the Board of Directors for the Habitat for Humanity and was very involved in locating properties to purchase. He was a past director for the Eastern Kansas Oil & Gas Association. His hobbies included his family and his work.
His family includes his wife, Betty, of the home, his son, Robert J. Nation and his wife, Jacque, Winfield, Kan., his daughter, Nancy Nation Heinz, Winfield, Kan., his brother, Charles Nation, Winfield, Kan., his grandchildren, Michael K. Heinz, Jr., Michelle Ptak, Rachael Land, Robert John Nation, II and Miranda Nation, and his great grandchildren, Michael C. Heinz, Nicholas F. Heinz, Jessica Ptak, Joseph Michael Ptak and Trevor Nation.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William Nation and Robert Nation.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield.
Memorials have been established in Mr. Nation’s name for Habitat for Humanity, the First United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Miles Funeral Home in Winfield was in charge of the arrangements.
MRS. MARGARETTE N. NEIL
Margarette N. Neil, age 87, of Sedan passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 7, 2007 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.
She was born Feb. 2, 1920 in Nowata County, Okla. to Lewis Tillman and Nancy Jane (White) DeBoard. She was raised in Freemont, Mo. and graduated from Freemont High School. She married Robert Reece and they later divorced. She married Robert "Bobbie" Neil on April 1, 1955 in Wichita. He preceded her in death in 1986. After his death, she moved back to Sedan in 1986 where, she lived until moving to Pleasant Valley Manor in 2OO5.
She was a member of the Chautauqua First Baptist Church. She loved to make satin quilts and can vegetables and loved children.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bobbie; one son, Bobbie; four brothers, Dennis, Donald, David and Lewis and three sisters, Josie Walker, Hazel Donahue and Ruby Benson.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

MRS. BETTY R. NELSON
WAUNETA - Betty Rose (Coffman) Nelson, age 75, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at the Jane Phillips Hospital in Bartlesyule, Okla. She was born Feb. 12, 1930 to Elishu Albert and Florence Edna (McCullough) Coffman.
She attended Union School District #98 and Ponca City schools. She married Glen Eldon Nelson of Ponca City on Nov. 6, 1948 at Grace Episcopal Church in Ponca City. They were married 56 years.
After they were married, Eldon and Betty spent 25 years on the east coast, where Eldon was one of the top thoroughbred horse racing jockeys. She was always very active in supporting Eldon in his horse racing endeavors. They returned back to their farm near Cedar Vale, Kan. in 1973 after Eldon’s retirement from horse racing.
She is survived by her husband, Glen Eldon Nelson, of the home, her son, Glen Eldon Nelson, Jr. and his wife, Vickie, Gardner, Kan., her daughter, Eldonna Rose (Nelson) Magnus and her husband, Randy, Ponca City, Okla., two brothers, Jim and Doug Coffman, Sparks, Nev., a sister, Mardy Grubb, Oklahoma City, Okla., seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Albert Coffman and two sisters, Shirley Reed and Tillie Stover.
She was an active member of the Wauneta Methodist Church and she also belonged to several local clubs. Betty served on the ASCS board for Chautauqua County from 1990-95. She also wrote weekly articles for the Wauneta area for the Winfield Daily Courier/Cedar Vale Lookout.
Services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Methodist Church in Cedar Vale. Interment was at the Round Mound Cemetery in Cedar Vale.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Cedar Vale EMS and may be given to the funeral home.

MASTER PAUL NELSON
Paul, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Nelson, died Friday, July 17. He was born in Peru, December 11, 1912, and was one year and 6 months old. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Saturday afternoon at three o’clock, Rev. J. B. Brown conducting the service. Interment was made in the Peru cemetery.
The parents and family have the sincere sympathy of all in their hour of affliction.
MRS. SADIE M. NEVITT
Sadie M. Nevitt, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka, Kan.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 in the United Methodist Church in Osage City., Rev. Francis Stockton conducted the services. Graveside services were held at the Fairview Cemetery east of Mildred, Kan.
She was born Jan. 21, 1911, near Sedan in Chautauqua County to David A. and Martha Marie (Haines) Carter. She graduated from Moline High School.
Mrs. Nevitt was elected county treasurer of Elk County and served in that office from 1950 to 1954. She then was elected Elk County Clerk from 1955 to 1963. She was also deputy county clerk of Greenwood County for two years. She then joined the General Electric Company in the finance department until she retired in 1973.
Mrs. Nevitt was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osage City. She was active in the Rebekah Lodge, the Business and Professional Women’s Club and a former president of the Kansas County Clerk Association.
She moved to Osage City in 1989 from Topeka. She had spent her early years in Chautauqua and Elk counties.
She married Clyde Hebb on Sept. 24m 1930. He preceded’her in death. She later married Urless D. “Babe” Nevitt on June 15, 1974. He preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1989.
Survivors include five sisters, Alma Ross, Osage City, Barbara Eisenbach, Osage City, Ruth Jellison, Sedan, Beulah Walker, Butler, Mo. and Bessie Eaton, Borger, Texas. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald Carter, Frank Carter and George Carter and three sisters, Nellie Fisher,. Dorene Smith and Alene Radcliff. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church sent in ‘care of Crable VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, KS 66523.
MRS. OPAL I. NEWCOMB
CHAUTAUQUA- Opal Irene Newcomb, 89, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. She had been a resident there for the past five years.
Services were held Friday, June 11, at 2 p.m. at the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, with the Rev. Myrna Jones of Tulsa, Okla. and Rev. Carroll Redwine officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Chautauqua.
Memorials are suggested to Pleasant Valley Manor and may be left at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home.
Opal was born March 5, 1915 in Willis, Okla. to Joe and Dolly (Freely) Stewart. She attended school in Asphal, Okla.
On Sept. 5, 1936, she married Tommy Newcomb. They would have celebrated 68 years of marriage in September. During that time, they lived in Oklahoma and Texas, moving to Sedan in 1953 and later to Chautauqua in 1964.
Opal was a homemaker and worked inside and around her home.
She is survived by her husband, Tommy, of the home; three daughters and their husbands, Pat and Lee Jones, Sedan, Lou and Bob Anderson, Chautauqua, and Tern and J.L. Tunison, rural Moline; five grandsons, Randy Bellieu, Langley, Okla., Mark Jones, Ellicott City, MD, Mike Jones, Sedan, Matt Jones, Sedan, Shane Tunison, Salina; two stepgrandchildren, Lisa Kimrey, Cherokee, and David Anderson, Emporia; and 13 greatgrandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

MR. RONDAL JOE "JOHNNIE" NEWTON
SEDAN, Kan. - Rondal Joe “Johnnie” Newton, 62, of Sedan, Kan. died Monday morning, Dec. 22, 2003, at his home in Sedan.
He was born May 21, 1941 at Atlanta, Kan. to Roy and Lillian (Curry) Newton. He grew up in the Atlanta area, where he attended school.
On Jan. 26, 1961 he married Barbara Kay Hutchings at Cedar Vale, Kan. Following their marriage, they made their home in the Atlanta area, where Mr. Newton farmed. In August 1973, they moved to Sedan, where he was involved in farming and worked for Chautauqua County until retiring.
Survivors include his wife, Kay, of the home in Sedan; two sons, Bryon Newton, rural Caney, Kan. and John Robin Newton, Lincoln, Neb.; one brother, Jim Newton, Grove, Okla.; one sister Shirley Lomon, Mesa, Ariz.; and two grandchildren, Nicholas Newton and Abby Newton, rural Caney.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Graveside Rites For Baby Here
Graveside services were held Monday afternoon at Greenwood cemetery for Billy Gene Niblack, infant son of Mr. Bill and Mrs. Ann{name added} Niblack. He was still-born at the Sedan City hospital early Sunday morning.
Rev. E. E. Shannon of Bartlesville conducted the services under the direction of the Graves-Baird Funeral home. Casketbearers were Joe Thomas Jones, Arthur Ray Jones, Jerry Jones and Junior Jones.
Other survivors include his grandmothers, Mrs Bessie Jones of Chautauqua and Mrs. Sarah Ann Niblack.
REV. DOIS D. NIX
INDEPENDENCE - Rev. Dois D. Nix, 68, of Independence, Kan. died at 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Independence, with Rev. Jim Blocher, Pastor and Rev. Jan Hayen of the First United Methodist Church of Lenexa, Kan. officiating. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.
The family has suggested memorial remembrances to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
Dois Dean Nix was born Jan. 1, 1937 at Hinton, Qkla., the son of Vernon McLin and Maude Augusta (Winn) Nix. He attended elementary school in Moss Grove, Okla. and attended and graduated from Hinton High School. He attended Connors State Junior College in Warner, Okla. and graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla.
Rev. Nix served as pastor of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church near Hydro, Okla. from 1959-62, pastor of the Oney Baptist Church from 1962-64, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Anthony, Kan. from 1964-71 and the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Kan. from 1971 until his retirement in January 2001.
Following his retirement, he served as Chaplain of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and served as pastor of the Sycamore United Methodist Church. In recent years, he served as interim pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Independence and the First Baptist Church of Howard, Kan.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence, served as president of the American Baptist Churches of the central region in the mid 1980’s and served on several boards of the American Baptist Churches of the United States. On Aug. 12, 1956, at the First Baptist Church of Hinton, Okla., he was united in marriage to Gloria June Carr. Mrs. Nix survives at the home.
Additional survivors include a son, Shannon Nix, Raleigh, NC, two daughters, Kelly Bever, Kokomo, Ind. and Erin Nix, Peny, Kan., four brothers, Glenn Nix, Tulsa, Okla., Garland Nix, Oklahoma City, Okla., Roy Nix, Grand Terrance, Calif. and Curtis Nix, Weatherford, Okla., two sisters, Elperna Mills, Binger, Okla. and Lois Schedler, Dallas, Texas and five grandchildren.
MRS. MILDRED A. NOLAN
Mildred Alice (Sisemore) Nolan, 93, of ElDorado, Kan., died Friday, May 4, 2007 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Greenlawn Cemetery at Checotah, Okla.
Mildred was born May 4, 1914, in Edmond, Okla., the daughter of B.H. and Annie (Storm) Sisemore. Mildred’s family returned to the family farm south of Checotah, Okla., shortly after her birth. She graduated from Checotah High School in 1933. On Oct. 12, 1936, she married Guy W. Nolan in Heavener, Okla.
Mildred attended college at Conner State College, Poteau Junior College and Oklahoma State University before finishing her degree in education at Southwestern College in Winfleld. She moved to Chautauqua County in 1951 to start her teaching career at Fowler, a one room school southeast of Sedan. She accepted the position of librarian at Sedan High School in 1956, a position she held until her retirement in 1981. While at Sedan High School she also started an art program for high school students as well as adult classes in the evenings. She was instrumental with the assistance of Tony Brunette, in starting the first Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle at Sedan High School. Mildred was also responsible for painting the first Blue Devil on the gymnasium floor at the school.
Mildred was an avid gardener and won many ribbons at the Chautauqua County Fair for her flowers and floral arrangements. She also enjoyed making log cabin quilts and made sure each of her nieces and nephews had one.
In 1993 Mildred moved to El Dorado to be closer to her son. She continued raising flowers and quilting until her health forced her to move to Lakepoint Nursing Center in 2005.
Mildred was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sedan and a former member of the B.P.W. and the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Survivors include her son Michael and wife Atcha of El Dorado; granddaughters Michele and husband Glenn Menke of Olathe, Kan., and Linette and husband Curt Liby of Benton, Kan.; greatgrandchildren, Michaela Menke and Grant Menke of Olathe, and Cade Liby and Clark Liby of Benton; brother Arlis Sisemore of Kingston, Okla.; sister-in-law Catherine Sizemore of Checotah, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Marie Leader and Juanita Bradley and brother Howard Sizemore.

MRS. MABLE NORDSTROM
BARTLESVILLE - Mable Lorene Nordstrom, 85, of Bartlesyule, Okla. died Friday, July 25, 2003, at the Jane Phillips Medical Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 28, at 2 p.m. at the Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Pastor James E. Meimerstorf officiating. Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney under the direction of the Stumpif Funeral Home.
Memorials have been established with the Our Savior Lutheran Church, 300 NE Madison, Bartlesville, OK 74006 for those who wish to send donations.
Mrs. Nordstrom was born on Jan. 6, 1918 in Grady County, Okla., the daughter of Howard and Gertrude (Thompson) Estes. She grew up and received her education in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas. She married Evald W. Nordstrom on April 13, 1941 at Manhattan, Kan. They lived in Caney and several other southeastern Kansas towns before moving to Bartlesville in 1956. Mr. Nordstrom taught in the Peru school in 1938 and was the music teacher in Moline. He was an instructor and band director for the Bartlesville schools until his retirement and Mrs. Nordstrom was employed with Phillips Petroleum Company for over 25 years until her retirement.
Mr. Nordstrom preceded her in death on March 1, 2000 and she continued living in her home in Bartlesville since that time.
She was a past member of the Jane Phillips Sorority and a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church. She enjoyed visiting with her friends at the same beauty shop, Gail’s Beauty Shop, for 29 years.
Mrs. Nordstrom is survived by two daughters, Karen Call and her husband, Al, and Kathy Grossman and her husband, Rick, all of Bartlesville, Okla., one brother, George Howard Estes, Bartlesville, Okla. three granddaughters, one great grandson and a very close friend, Dorothy Cross, of Bartlesville, Okla.
MR. JERRY J. NORTON
NIOTAZE - Jerry Joseph Norton was born July 18, 1930 to Reuel and Alma Norton in Newton, Kan. His early years were spent in Newton attending school, helping his father and grandfather in Norton Memorials and working at various odd jobs. He obtained his amateur radio license, advanced class, at the age of 14.
Jerry graduated from Newton High School in 1948 and joined the U. S. Navy. He served in San Diego, Calif. and in the Samoan Islands. He was chosen for Officer Candidate School and went to Bainbridge, Md. He then went to Boulder, Colo, to attend the University of Colorado, where he studied Engineering Physics. He worked in Rangely, Colo, for the telephone company.
He met Edna Mae Sell in Boulder and they were married Sept. 18, 1953 in Booker, Texas. They went to Columbus, Ohio, where he worked for North American Aviation. In 1979, Jerry started working for Applied Automation, Phillips Petroleum Company, in Bartlesville, Okla., and they moved to Caney, Kan. Jerry worked for several companies through the years.
Jerry had four patents and had several papers and articles published in electronic engineering journals. He had a private pilot’s license and love to fly small aircraft.
In 2001, due to failing health, Jerry retired for the final time and returned to Niotaze, where he died Sept. 21, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and a grandson. He is survived by his wife, Edna, his daughters Shannon Richards and husband, Bart, Sinking Springs, Pa., Heather Horton, Bartlesville, Okla., Tammy Sagastizado and husband, Felipe, Niotaze, Kan., Colleen Barrett and husband, Woody, Shaftsbury, Vt, Kelley Rigney and husband, Rick, Independence, Kan., his son, Dennis Norton and wife, Tami, Spring, Texas and sister Margaret Earl and husband, Walt, Cromwell, MD., 30 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Independence, Kan. A brief graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the Heart Cemetery in Booker, Texas.
Memorial contributions may be given to Habitat for Humanity or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Humanitarian Fund or Mission Fund in care of Graves Funeral Home of Caney, who was in charge of the arrangements.
MRS. MARY A. NUTTER - Submitted by Teresa DeBerry Ewing
Mrs. Mary A. Nutter, 86, died Monday night in a local convalescent home where she had been a resident since January 1972. Born Mary Ann Thompson at Chautauqua, Kan. on Dec. 23 1886, she was the daughter of Eugene and Melessa (Whiteneck) Thompson.
On Dec 25, 1902, she was married to Ira Leslie Nutter at Sedan. He died May 4, 1952.
Following his death, Mrs. Nutter resided in Los Angeles for 14 years before returning to the Coffeyville area. Before 1952 she had lived for various periods of time in the Fawn Creek area near Kaw City, in the North Caney River Valley near Sedan, at Wichita, at Leroy and in the Peru-Sedan vicinity.
Survivors include two daughters, Iris DeBerry of Parkville, Mo., and Avis Hoyt of Leavenworth; six sons, George F. of Wellington, Eugene C. of Rt.1 Coffeyville; Everett A. and Andrew L. both of 401 W. Second, Robert D. of Wichita and Max or Orlando, Fla., a sister Carrie Darnall of Peru; a brother Bert Thompson of Pawhuska; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Ford Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Neodesha Cemetery.
MR. OREN R. "WINK" NUTTER
Oren R. "Wink" Nutter, age 80, died Monday morning, Dec. 18, 2000 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. He was born Feb. 29, 1920 in Sedan to Charlie and Alice (Lounsbury) Nutter.
He attended Peru High School. Wink worked for various pipeline companies all around the United States for about 20 years, moving back to Peru where he became the town Marshall for about 3 years. He then worked for an oilfield drilling company in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri for about 3 years. He then moved to Tulsa, OK where he supervised apartment complexes. Later with the same company he moved to Oklahoma City, OK and supervised a new facility of apartment complexes until retirement in 1985, moving back to the Peru community.
Survivors include: 1 brother, Charles Nutter of Stinett, TX; nephew, Gary Nutter of Parsons: many cherished friends in Peru and surrounding area. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Leon Nutter and Dale Nutter, 2 sisters, Mavis Roebuck and Violet Dodson.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a register book signing at the Graves-Funeral Home, Caney, on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Arrangements are being handled by Graves Funeral Home, Caney.
