MRS. VELVIE M. PEEL
SEDAN - Velvie M. Peel, 86, of Sedan, Kan. died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, in Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.
She was born Feb. 23, 1917 in Chautauqua, Kan. to Thomas and Margie (Maurer) Hopkins. She grew up and attended school in Oglesby, Okla, Ochelata, Okla, Elgin, Kan. and completed her education in Chautauqua.
On Oct. 19, 1935 she married Charley A. Peel at Sedan. Following their marriage they made their home in Oklahoma, south and east of Elgin, where they farmed and ranched. In 1947 they moved to their farm northeast of Sedan in the St. Charles community, where they lived until moving to Sedan in 1972. Mr. Peel preceded her in death Nov. 27, 1979.
Mrs. Peel was a member of Grange in Longton and the St. Charles and Grafton communities.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Peel, Columbia, Mo., Tom Peel, Sedan and John Peel, Peru; two daughters, Edna Peel, Sedan and Neva Jacobus, Scott City, Kan.; one brother, Carl Hopkins, Enid, Okla.; one sister, Nona Hill, Enid, Okla.; 19 grandchildren, four step grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, 22 stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and eight stepgreat-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, 2 step-great-greatgrandchildren and three brothers.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua, with Walter Darnall of Sedan officiating.
The family suggests memorials to Sedan E.M.S. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.
Services were under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan.
MRS. DORIS A. PELLETT
Doris Ann Pellett, 87, of rural Peru and former longtime Garland and Arcadia, Kan. area resident, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, in Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla.
She was born March 28, 1916 in Cato, Kan. to Marcellus and Nellie Belle (Jones) Felt. She grew up in Bourbon and Crawford Counties and graduated from Arcadia High School.
On Aug. 27, 1936, she married Raymond C. Pellett in Bourbon County. Following their marriage, they lived in the Garland and Arcadia area, where Mr. Pellett farmed and Mrs. Pellett was a homemaker. They made their home in the Garland area, until moving to Tyro in 1999 and rural Peru in May of 2000. Mr. Pellett preceded her in death on March 26, 2003.
She attended the Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Clarksburg Quilting Club.
Survivors include one son, Stephen Pellett, San Diego, Calif., two daughters, Lynn Peck, rural Peru and Beverly Ange, Gilroy, Calif, one brother, Charles Felt, Miami, Okla., one sister, Margaret VonKaenel, Colorado, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, in Clarksburg Cemetery near Garland, Kan., with Rev. Don Talent of Victory Life Center in Pittsburg officiating.

MR. RAYMOND C. PELLETT
Raymond C. Pellett, 88, of rural Peru and former longtime Garland and Arcadia, Kan. area resident, died Wednesday night, March 26, 2003, in Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 28, 1914 in rural Garland, Kan. to Seth and Sadie (Vandermillan) Pellett. He grew up in Bourbon County and attended school in Ft. Scott, graduating from Ft. Scott High School and Ft. Scott Community College.
On Aug. 27, 1936, he married Doris Felt in Bourbon County. Following their marriage, they lived in the Garland and Arcadia area, where Mr. Pellett farmed and also taught school for a period of time. They made their home in the Garland and Arcadia area until moving to Tyro in 1999 and rural Peru in May of 2000.
He attended the Methodist Church and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Doris, one son, Stephen Pellett, San Diego, Calif., two daughters, Lynn Peck, rural Peru and Beverly Ange, Gilroy, Calif., seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2003, in Clarksburg Cemetery near Garland, with Rev. Don Talent of Victory Life Center in Pittsburg officiating.

MR. CECIL W. PENDERGRAFT
Cecil "Wayne" Pendergraft was born in Sedan to Bruce and Grace (Millison) Pendergraft on June 9, 1933. He passed away at home surrounded by his loving family and friends on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008 after a six-month battle with cancer.
He enjoyed roller-skating and it was at the skating rink he met his future wife Ada "Ruth" Courtoy. They married in Sedan on June 5,1960. They moved to Aurora, Mo., in 1974.
Wayne was baptized in the Baptist Church of Sedan as a young man and attended the United Methodist Church in Aurora.
Wayne was honorably discharged from the Navy. He went on to become an automotive technician for over 50 years and had the distinguished accomplishment of being one of the first people to ever take the Automotive Service Excellence exam when it was first offered in 1972. He achieved the "Master Technician" level, an honor he held until his retirement in 1995. He spent the majority of his career working on Chrysler products.
Wayne had several hobbies. He enjoyed playing the guitar and was a very accomplished player in his younger years. He also enjoyed camping, boating and water skiing. He loved woodworking and has made several grandfather clocks. He also enjoyed his auto working and restored a Willys jeep and two Nash Metropolitans. He could fix or repair almost anything and if it could not be fixed, he would just build a new one. He also loved to travel and he and his wife have been in 48 of the 50 states. He also enjoyed helping people and was always the first to show up to do whatever job had to be done.
Wayne was the third oldest of 13 children. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his one older brother, Marvin.
He is survived by his wife Ruth of Aurora; his daughter Kelley Martinez and husband Eddie and granddaughter Victoria of Aurora; his son David and wife Jennifer of Aurora and step-grandchildren Tiffany, Amanda and Frank Larsen. His mother-in-law Martha Courtoy of Aurora; his sister-in-law Kaye Loftin and husband Joe, of Morrilton, Ark., and Kaye's children Steve Loftin of Cabot, Ark., and Kristi Collins and husband Dustin and daughter Anna of Pottsville, Ark.
He also has eleven surviving siblings, brothers Richard and wife Mary Ann of Golden, Mo.; Jimmy and wife Janet of Golden, Mo.; Phil and wife Pauline of Seattle, Wash.; Steve and wife Myrna of Dayton, Ore.; and sisters Letha Bays of Pratt, Kan.; Margaret Holloway of Los Angeles, Calif.; Jean Miller and husband Bill of Beavercreek, Ore.; Linda Cantrell and husband Jerry of San Jose, Calif.; Sharon Gibbons and husband Denny of Dayton, Ore.; Nina Long and husband Ottis of Salem, Ore.; Betty Boyles of Salem, Ore., as well as numerous nieces and nephews and countless family friends.
One of his recent projects was building Personal Energy Transport (PET) devices for the United Methodist Church. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made for PET of Southwest Missouri and may be sent to Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora.
Services were at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008 at 11 a.m.
MR. LOYD PENNINGTON
WICHITA, Kan. - Loyd Uell Pennington, age 80, of Wichita, Kan., passed away April 10, 2004. Loyd was an owner/operator of a commercial boat dock.
Survivors include four sons, Floyd and Ben, Wichita, Kan., Ed, Sedan, Kan. and Joe, New Port Ritchie, Fla., two brothers, Arvel, Harveille, Mo. and Carl, Gallao, Mo., two sisters, Norma Hager and Evelyn Teny, Harveille, Mo., 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Capitola and a daughter, Judy Bakker.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Thesday, April 13,2004, at the Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Funeral services for M. C. Percy, who died Tuesday morning following a stroke several days ago, were conducted, at 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal church by the pastor, the Rev. H. C. Benton.
Milton Cline Percy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Percy, was born December 14, 1853 in New York state, and departed this life April 3, 1934, aged 81 years, 3 months and 20 days. His mother died when be was five months of age, and he moved with his father to Ontario, Canada, where they lived for nineteen years. In 1872 he went to Wisconsin, later to South Dakota and in 1890 to Kansas. coming directly to this county, where he spent the remainder of his life, having actively engaged in farming until eighteen years ago, when he retired and moved to Sedan. Shortly after returning to the United States he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and held membership in this church sixty-two years. He was united in marriage to Mary Winnie Muder of Sedan June 6, 1897 To this union were born two daughters, Ines now Mrs. Victor Wilson of Sedan, and Mildred of the home. Surviving are the widow, two daughters, four grand children and a sister, Mrs. L. M. Bennethum of Madrid Iowa, and host of relatives and friends. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
On June 11, 1960 she and James R. Perkins repeated their wedding vows under the care of the Clear Creek Friends Meeting on the Eariham College campus. From June, 1960 to the end of her life she made her home in the Howard, Kansas community where she served as a 4-H Community Club leader, was active in the Howard Mothers’ Club, during which time they raised the funds for the swimming pool and tennis courts. She was the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator and also an active member of the Howard Tuesday Reading Club and the Elk County Cattlewomen’s Association. She served her church community at University Friends Meeting and later at Heartland Friends Meeting in Wichita and also served on the Board of Advisors of Earlham School of Religion, Richmond, Indiana. For over twenty five years she was in charge of the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at University Friends Meeting.
Upon the death of her brother William W. Wildman in 1981, she assumed the duties of Farm Manager for Mac-O-Chee Farm in Ohio. She found great enjoyment following her father’s footsteps in the role of the management of the farm, raising corn and fattening cattle. In 1993 she and the family moved Mac-O-Chee Farm operations to Kansas and she continued their family’s 180-year involvement in agriculture. During her busy life, she found time to be a full time mother to her and Jim’s three children: David, Mark, and Elizabeth. During the last ten years of her life, as her medical problems increased, she devoted all of her energy to being wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her husband, James; sons, David of Howard and Mark of Eureka; daughter, Elizabeth Hendricks of Howard and their families.
Barbara had a zest for living and lived her life to the fullest. Following a three day struggle after bypass surgery, her system began to shut down. With her friends and family at her side she slipped away Sunday afternoon, April 21, 2002 in Galichia Heart Hospital at Wichita, Kansas, to join her parents and her brother to be with her heavenly father.
Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002 at the West Elk High School on Highway 99 south of Howard. The service was under the care of Heartland Friends Meeting with Dean Young presiding. Music was provided by Shelli Kadel, Laura Dungan, Aaron Fowler, Dorlan Bales and Allyson Bowen. Private interment was held at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard with Richard Foster presiding and Allyson Bowen playing guitar. Memorials have been established with the Eariham School of Religion, Heartland Friends Meeting Building Fund, Wichita Friends School, and the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
MRS. PEGGY BARTH PERKUS
Peggy Barth Perkus, 87, of Palm Coast, FL, died Friday, June 1 at Vencor Hospital, Green Cove Springs, FL. She was born at Havana, KS and moved to this area in 1988 from Stuart, FL.
She was a retired secretary for the U.S. Navy and was a school teacher. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, DAV Auxiliary, AARP and Maryland Retired Teachers Association.
Memorial donations may be sent to Flagler County Humane Society, 1 Shelter Drive, Palm Coast, FL 32137. Craig Funeral Home of Palm Coast was in charge of arrangements.
On January 31, 1958, she married Ernest Eugene Persinger at Longmont, Colorado. They made their home in Denver where Margaret was employed by the Martin-Marietta Company and she also worked for commercial banks in the Denver area. They moved to Longton in 1959 and remained there until moving to Junction City, Kansas for one year, in 1961. Margaret and Ernest returned to Longton and made their home in the Longton community throughout their lives.
Margaret was co-owner and manager of Frontier Auction and Realty, and Persinger Sales and Service in Longton for more than 30 years. She was also employed for several years at banks in Independence, Longton and Moline. Margaret was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was a member of Ladonia Chapter #243 Order of the Eastern Star, the Longton Historical Society and the Longton United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest; her sons, James Persinger and his wife Marina of Ogallala, Nebraska and Jeff Persinger and his wife Glenda of Sedan; her brother, C. Wilbur “Bill” Dyer and his wife Sally of Longton; her sister, Sharon Greenleaf and her husband William of Paradise, California and 5 grandchildren, Travis, Bret and Nathan Persinger of Sedan and Cody and Taylor Persinger of Ogallala.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2002 at the Longton United Methodist Church with Rev. Buit Santee and Rev. Joe Niéhols officiating. Interment was held at the Longton Cemetery. Memorials have been established with the Longton United Methodist Church, the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice of Wichita and the Gansel House of Independence. MR. ELTON L. PETTIGREW
Elton L. “E.L.” Pettigrew, age 92, of Dexter, died April 16, 2007 at the Dexter Care Center.
He was born July 30, 1914 in Grainola, Okla. to Ray F: and Edna Yeager Pettigrew.
He attended grade schools in Glendale, Grant Center and Spencer. He was a 1932 graduate of Cedar Vale High School.
E.L. married Nellmarie Hacker, August 1, 1940 in Newkirk, Okla. Together they owned and operated the P-Bar Ranch in the Hoosier Community for over 59 years, where Nellmarie still resides.
E.L. began farming and ranching in 1932 and continued in his life’s work until his health began to fail 3 1/2 years ago. Over the years he was a great help to his neighbors with farming and ranching problems. He enjoyed feeding cattle and attending all the cattle sales in the area. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Wichita and a member of the Dexter Masons for over 50 years. He also enjoyed the Dexter Senior Citizen’s card and gaming parties, dancing at the Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers at both Arkansas City and Sedan, and being surrounded by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Kelsey and Harold. A sister, Mozelle also died earlier.
He is survived by his wife Nelimarie of the home and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family met friends on Wednesday, April 18 at the Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale.
His service was held on April 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale followed by burial at the Cedar Vale Cemetery. Memorial contributions are being made to the Hicks Chapel Church of Dexter, in care of the Wheeler Funeral Home, 803 Loomis, Winfleld, KS 67156.
MR. GARY G. PETTY
Gary G. Petty, age 62, of lola, Kansas passed away Monday, November 5, 2001, at the Allen County Hospital in lola, KS.
He was born March 5, 1939 in Sedan, Kansas to Roy P. and Lois R. (Banning) Petty. He grew up in Sedan and attended school there. He graduated from Emporia State University. He served in the U. S. Army Reserve. He was a Farm Bureau Insurance Agent for twenty-six years, working as an Agent in Manhattan, Junction City and Marysville, Kansas. He had an opportunity to become a partner in an insurance agency in Iola and he moved there in 1984. He has worked for the Gates Rubber Company for thc past ten years.
He was married to Carol Green in 1958. That marriage ended in divorce. On October 21, 1978, he married Charlotte J. Grasmick at Marysville, KS. He was an active member of the Grace Southern Baptist Church in Iola and served on the Board of Directors of the Iola Area Christian School. He enjoyed crocheting as a hobby.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte, of the home, two daughters, Janice Lyhane, Marysville, KS and Sheryl Jones, Derby, KS, one stepson, Chris Clodfelter, Galveston, TX, one stepdaughter, Lucinda Quails, Wichita, KS, his parents, Roy and Lois Petty, Iola KS, seven grandchildren, one great grandson and one foster daughter, Dawn Ebert, Newton, KS.
Services were held on Friday, November 9, 2001, at the Grace Southern Baptist Church in Iola at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services were at 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, Kansas with Rev. Jeff Cokely and Rev. D. Paul Hickman officiating.
A memorial fund with the Iola Area Christian School has been established in his name. The Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola was in charge of the arrangements.
MR. ROY PETTY
Roy P. Petty, 87, of Sedan died Tuesday night, Nov. 19, 2002, in Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.
He was born Sept. 27, 1915, south of Sedan, to Fred and Bertha Mae Petty. He grew up and attended school in the Limestone area south of Sedan.
On May 26, 1936, he married Lois Rena Banning at Howard, Kan. Following their marriage, they made their home in Sedan, where Mr. Petty worked at the Sedan Bakery. In 1938, they purchased the bakery and operated it until purchasing their farm northeast of Sedan in 1942. Mr. Petty raised cattle, worked for Union Gas Co. and the Chautauqua County Road Department. He retired from the cattle operation several years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Lois, of the home in Sedan; one brother, Dean Petty, Wichita; two granddaughters; one step granddaughter; one step grandson; three great grandsons; and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Petty, on Nov. 5, 2001.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, in the Greenwood Cemetery at Sedan, with Rev. Harold Tucker offficiating.

BRANDON L. PHELPS
Brandon Lee Phelps, age 16, of Pratt, died Tuesday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services were Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Pratt, with the Rev. Calvin Moore officiating. Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Pratt County EMS or the American Lung Association.
Mr. Phelps was born July 25, 1984 in Hoisington. He was a junior at Pratt High School and attended Faith Chapel and the First Baptist Church Youth Group.
Survivors include his parents, Bill and Sharon MaGee, Pratt, and Ricky and Kathye Phelps, Great Bend, a sister, Amanda Phelps, of the home, two stepbrothers, Devin Ramsey and Keylin Phelps, both of Great Bend, his grandparents, James Phelps, Texas, Eunice Lane, Hoisington, Larry Schmidt, Sylvia, KS, Connie McKinzie, Pratt, Charles and Marie MaGee, Independence and Ray and Neva Howland, Beloit his great grandparents, Edna Parr, Pratt, Emery and Virginia Schmidt, McPherson and Loventrice Sutter, Hutchinson.
Brandon was the nephew of Dale and Rosie Sweaney of Sedan.
MRS. WALTER PHILLIPS
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Coffey attended the funeral of their sister-in-law, Mrs. Walter Phillips held at Elk City, Monday evening. Mrs. Phillips leaves a husband, seven children her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Piesker, of Elk City, and several other relatives. The saddest thing in this world is when a mother is taken away from her children. The relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.

Pierce--Lucy Nelson was born in Breckenridge County, Kentucky, Feb. 14th, 1810, was married to Thomas Pierce, Feb. 17th, 1824, died March 24th, 1886, aged 76 years, 1 month, 13 days. She was the mother of six children, two having preceded her to the spirit land. She gave her heart to God, and hand to the M.E. Church, more than twenty years ago, and lived a faithful and consistent Christian life. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn her departure. MR. THOMAS PIERCE - Submitted by Linda Gardner
In Memoriam At 9:15 o'clock last Wednesday morning Mr. Thomas Pierce departed this life, aged 80 years and 5 month. Mr. Pierce was born in North Carolina, but had been a pioneer in Kentucky and Illinois before coming to Kansas, fifteen years ago. He was a man of sterling integrity and broad humanitarian principles. He was an active church member, being connected with the M.E. Church at this place, and is sincerely mourned by the entire community. The funeral was held at the residence of his son-in-law, Wesley Zimmerman, in Otter Township, Cowley County, with whom the old gentleman had lived for some time. The surviving children are Wm. Pierce, Mrs. Eldridge Nelson, Mrs. Emmanuel Zimmerman, and Mrs Wesley Zimmerman. Mrs. Pierce died about a year ago and was buried on the old farm, and now "Uncle Tommy" as he was familiarly called, has been laid to rest by her side.

Claude L. Pierson was born June 18, 1886, in Jasper county, Missouri, died October 30, 1926, at the home of his parents south of Sedan.
He was married June 15, 1913 to Anna Harrison at Purcell, Missouri where they made their home until June of this year.
He is survived by his wife, his father and mother, Mr. ans Mrs. William Pierson, and three sisters; Mrs. H. K. Haverfield and Miss Violet Pierson, of Elk City, Kansas, and Mildred Pierson of the home address; six brothers, Herbert, Daryl, and Billy of the home address, John of Galena, Kansas, Carl of Pitcher, Okla., and Casius who lives in Colorado.
Claude was a member of Alba Lodge No. 595, I. 0. 0. F., of Alba, Missouri. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Greenwood cemetery, conducted by Rev. Allen Lee of the Baptist church. Members of the Odd Fellows lodge of Sedan also conferred the burial rites of the order at the grave.

Herbert C. Pierson Dead
This community was greatly saddened by the death of Herbert Pierson, which occurred at Mercy Hospital, Independence, Saturday night, March 1st, where he had undergone an operation for appendicitis. The body was brought in the Bucklee ambulance to Sedan and from there to the home of his parents in South Peru, Monday afternoon.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Sedan Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. B. Brown, pastor of the Peru Christian church. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery at Sedan.
Deceased was 26 years old. Born May 4, 1904 at Dunoweg, Missouri. He is survived by his wife Ethel and three small children, his parents Mr. & Mrs. W. M. Pierson, four brothers and three sisters.
Four brothers has preceded him in death. He was a fine and loving, son, husband, and father, a good citizen, ambitious and industrious, whose going is a sad blow to his family and relatives and a loss to the community in which he lived.

John Pierson Dead
John Pierson, age 29, died at the home of his sister at Elk City, Kansas, at an early hour Monday, December 19. He was a victim of tuberculosis with which he had been ill for some time. His wife died about a year ago leaving an infant child, which is being cared for by relatives of the mother at Galena. He had just been to Galena to visit the child and on the way back stopped at Elk City to visit his sister, where his death occurred Monday morning. He was a son of Mr. & Mrs. W. M. Pierson who lives South of Sedan.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his daughter Marvine, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. William Pierson, five brothers, Claud Pierson, of Peru, Kansas, Cash Pierson, of Webb City, Missouri, Carl Pierson of Galena, Kansas, Herbert, Dearl and Bill all of the home. Three sisters Ella Haverfield, of Elk City, Kansas, Violet and Mildred both of the home.
Funeral services were held in Greenwood cemetery here Tuesday afternoon, conducted by a pastor from Elk City.

Rites Set for Mrs. Pierson
Funeral services for Mrs. Leora May Pierson, 77 who died last night at Coffeyville Memorial Hospital, will be held at 2:00 Saturday afternoon in the chapel of the Ford Funeral Home. The Rev. W. L. McEver, pastor of First Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at Sedan.
Mrs. Pierson, who came to Coffeyville from Sedan in September 1952 to make her home with a daughter, Mrs. Ella Haverfield, 615 West 8th, had suffered a fractured hip Nov. 17. She had been in ill health for six years.
She was born Jan. 24, 1877 a twin, at Marystown, MO., and spent her youth in Missouri. In 1901 at Joplin, she married William M. Pierson, who died Sept. 19, 1937 at Peru. The couple came to Kansas 2l years ago, living at Sedan and Peru. Mrs. Pierson was a member of the First Baptist church at Sedan.
Survivors besides Mrs. Haverfield are daughters, Mrs. Mildred Lamb, Independence, Kas.; and Mrs. Violet Harp, Pueblo, Colo.; two sons, Daryl Pierson of Pueblo and Bill Pierson of Grand Junction, Colo. Two brothers, Arthur Harrison Oregon; and Pete Harrison, western Kansas; a twin sister, Mrs. Eldora Evans, Tacoma Wash.; and other sisters, Mrs. Elizebeth Jones, and Mrs. Zella Smith both of Joplin, and Mrs. Hester Hadendorf, Baxter Springs; 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Peru Child Dies
Merle Okeith, infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Daryl Pierson of Peru died early Saturday morning, after a weeks illness with pneumonia. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon in the home.
Burial was made in the Elcado cemetery under direction of the Buckles funeral home. The child is survived by the parents, a sister, Viola, and a brother, Marcus, grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. William Pierson, of Peru and many other relatives, of this area.

William Pierson Dead
William Pierson, aged 83, died at his home in Peru Thursday night, September 16, after an extended illness and feebleness engendered by advanced age. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the family home by Rev. Paul Lindsey. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery at Sedan, in charge of the Buckles Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, three Sons and three daughters. The sons are Cash, of Joplin, Missouri, and Daryl, and Bill both of Peru; the daughters are Ella Haverfield of Elk City; Mrs. Cleve Lamb of Chautauqua, and Mrs. Archie Harp, of Elgin. Five sons have preceded him in death.
Lucy “Letty” Sturges was born Dec. 20, 1941 in Sedan. She was raised in Sedan, where she graduated from Sedan High School in 1959. In 1963, she fulfilled a lifelong dream when she received her Certificate of Nursing as a Registered Nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She passed away in Fairfield, Calif. on July 5, 2002.
She served in a variety of nursing capacities throughout her career, serving in Skilled Nursing Facilities, emergency rooms, and ICU’s. Later in her career, she served as Director of Nursing, Quality Assurance Coordinator, and Nurse Consultant in several Long Term Care Facilities in northern California. In recent years, she worked for various Home Health Agencies, most currently with North Bay Health At Home.
She is best remembered by her family, friends, co-workers and patients as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and nurse, who was compassionate and lovingly provided dignity, respect, comfort and care.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Charles and Catherine Sturges, and son, David Pinckard.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dan Pinckard, Fairfield, son, Brian Borrell, Fairfield, sons and daughter-in-laws, Mark and Tammy Borrell, Concord, Scott and Vicky Borrell, Vacaville, John and Kristin Pinckard, Sacramento, daughter and son-inlaw, Brenda and Jim Dougan, Santa Rosa, daughter, Linda Pinckard, Louisville, Ky. and daughter, Cindy Borrell, Vacaville, brothers and sister-inlaws, John and Lou Sturges, Salem, Ore., M. Darrell and Judy Sturges, Aurora, Colo., Herb and Charlene Sturges, Sedan, Kan., and brother, George Sturges, Sedan, Kan., grandchildren, Paul and Laura Borrell, Concord, Allison and Taylor Barnes, Vacaville, Seth, Ashley and Kevin Borrell, Vacaville, Hayley Dougan, Santa Rosa, and Cage Pinckard, Sacramento. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
A memorial has been established by the Grafton Community and may be sent to Dixie Selter.

Dola L. Piner, 79, of Grenola, died at her home on Sunday, July 3. She was born Oct. 27, 1903 in Chautauqua County, the daughter of John and Nellie (Keck) Baker.
She was a housewife and member of the Grenola Christian Church.
Survivors are her husband, John Lawrence Piner of the home; one daughter, Verna Lou Piner of Grenola; one brother, Dean Baker of Grenola; one sister, Viola Baker of Cambridge.
Services were held Wednesday, July 6, at 10:00 a.m. in the Grenola Christian Church, Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola. Rev. Harvey Richardson officiated. Watt Funeral Home at Moljne was in charge of arrangements.
MRS. ALICE J. PIPHER
DEXTER, Kan. - Alice Jane Pipher, 87, of Dexter, Kan., passed away on Tuesday evening, May 24, 2005, at Dexter Care Center in Dexter after a short illness.
Born on Aug. 16, 1918, she was the daughter of Fred and Mina (Thompson) Jackson of Torrance, Kan. Alice was a direct descendant of the first pioneers in the Grouse Creek area of Cowley county. At a young age, her family moved to Manhattan, Kan., where she graduated from high school.
Alice was united in marriage to Lt. col. Wayne R. Pipher on Feb. 17. 1937 in Abilene, Kan. During much of their married life, Alice was an Air Force wife, homemaker and mother. After Wayne retired from the Air Force, they made their home in Indianapolis, Ind. Alice moved back to Sedan, Kan. after the death of her husband in 1999.
Alice’s hobbies included reading, sewing and doll collecting. In Indianapolis, she served as an assistant librarian at he local schools.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a brother, and her husband. She leaves behind sons Lynn R. Pipher, Chautauqua County, Kan. and James W. Pipher, Alexandria; Va.
Cremation has been effected. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements. At a future date, Alice’s remains will be interred beside those of her her husband in Arlington National in Arlington, VA.
MRS. ELAINE PIPHER
SEDAN, Kan. - Elaine Pipher, 64, of Sedan died Saturday morning, Nov. 12, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, after a long illness.
She was born Jan. 12, 1941 in New York, to Walter and Josephine Wilbert. Shortly after she was born, the Wilbert family moved to the Baltimore, Md. area. She graduated from Milford Mill High School near Randallstown, Md. and following high school, she entered the University of Maryland. While there, she met her husband, Lynn Pipher.
On March 10, 1962, she married Lynn Pipher in the Washington D.C. area. After their marriage, she worked for the United States Army Map Service as a Cartographer. During her employment there, she worked on modeling the area of the moon that the Apollo astronauts landed on. One of her prized memories is a picture the astronauts autographed for her. After working for the Army Map service for several years, she entered the real estate business near Westminster, Md. She lived there until her husband retired and came to Kansas in 1999 to live.
Mrs. Pipher had many interests, she was a superb horsewomen, she enjoyed driving their carriages, and was an avid reader. She enjoyed her horses, cats, and dogs and was involved in property rights issues.
She is survived by her husband, Lynn Pipher, Sedan, Kan., and one sister, Audrey Meyer, Sykesville, Md.
Cremation has taken place and the family has requested no services at this time.
The family has suggested memorials to the Progressive Super nuclear Palsy Society and can be sent to the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, KS 67361. Arrangements were under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan.
It saddens our hearts this week to chronicle the death of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pitt which occurred at their home east of Elgin Monday night, Feb. 16.
Mr. and Mrs. Pitt are both pioneers of Chautauqua county and this community and enjoyed a large circle of friends who are saddened to know of their sudden death. Mr. and Mrs. Pitt like many of our citizens had been complaining of not feeling well for several days past, but very few knew of the critical condition they were in until just before their death, which was caused from pneumonia, Mr. Pitt passed away about eight o'clock Monday evening and Mrs. Pitt followed him just a few hours later. They will be buried today in the Elgin cemetery.
The Journal is unabte to get infomation for a proper obituary this week but will endeavor to publish it next week.

Joseph G. Pitt was born in Springfield Tenn., on the 14th day of February 1853. In this place and state he grew to manhood. At the age of eighteen he came to Kansas, and in the spring of 1880 he was married to Miss Viretta Dyer at Sedan, Kansas. To this union one child was born a little daughter who only lingered about two months, then passed on before them. Joseph Pitt spent most of his married life near Elgin, Kansas with the exception of a few years he lived in Colorado, departed this life at his home just east of Elgin, February the 16th 1920.
Mrs. Viretta Pitt, wife of the above Joseph G. Pitt was born July the 18th 1823, at Deb Moines, Iowa. She was married to Joseph G.Pitt March 2, 1880. Departed this life February the 16th 1920 only about five hours after her husband, and thus two souls that had spent along and happy life together, passed out hand and hand into that life beyound the vale. Leaving behind them a host of friends to mourn their departure.
Joseph Pitt has three sisters and one brother, eight nephews and seven neices to mourn his departure.
Mrs. Pitt has four brothers and two sisters besides a host of other relatives to mourn her loss.
The funeral services was conducted from their late home by Rev. J. B. Brown of the Methodist church and the burial made in the Elgin cemetery.
NOTE: Viretta Harris (Dyer) Pitt was the daughter of Samuel M. Dyer and Mary Elizabeth (Gilbrech) Dyer.
MASTER JOHN PITTMAN
This community received another shock Thursday morning when the sudden and tragic death of John, two, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Pittman was announced.
The boy was a husky and smiling little lad who was well loved by all. No funeral arrangements as yet have been announced. Death came in just a few hours after his first illness, the nature of which has not been learned by this correspondent.
