MRS. ALTHEA B. RECTOR
Althea B. “Grandma Babe” Rector, age 95, of Sedan, Kansas, formerly of Independence, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 23, 2002, at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan, Kansas.
Althea was born February 10, 1907 to Harry 0. and Eva Mae (Holden) Smith in rural Independence, Kansas. She was reared and educated in the Independence community. She graduated from Independence High School. On June 4, 1927, Althea married Dee J. Rector in Kansas City, Missouri. They owned and operated a farm near Independence. Mr. Rector preceded her in death in 1963. Althea was a homemaker and a member of the Bolton Friends Church.
Mrs. Rector is survived by four children, Jane Pomeroy, Derby. Kansas, Linda Mordy, Mequon, Wisconsin, J. D. Rector, Sedan, Kansas and Robert Rector, Brighton, Colorado. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, five sisters and one granddaughter.
Friends may call at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home to sign her register book from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Her casket will be closed.
Funeral services for Althea B. Rector will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2002 at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Reverend Grady Miller, Pastor of the Bolton Friends Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.

MRS. CYNTHIA RECTOR
Cynthia Houck Rector, age 66 of Sedan, Kansas, formerly of Independence, passed away Friday morning, May 4, 2001, at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. TX.
Cynthia was born December 8, 1934 in Independence, KS to Frank M. and Helen (Halsey) Houck. She was raised in Independence where she attended and graduated from Independence High School. She attended Independence Junior College, Kansas State University and the University of Florida, where she received her BS degree in Nursing.
Cynthia married J. D. Rector on August 30, 1953 at the Episcopal Church in Independence, KS. In her early years of marriage, she was a Homemaker, taking care of her children and was involved in community out-reach programs. Due to J. D.'s. work, they moved extensively throughout Kansas. Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois and Florida, returning to Sedan in 1992 where she worked for Four County Mental Health as an Adult Case Manager. Her prior work included Osteoporosis Research, Crisis Intervention and Retail Merchandizing for Petite Sophisticate’s. Cynthia was a member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church of Sedan, served as a Sedan City Council member and had belonged to the P.E.O. sisterhood for many years.
Cynthia is survived by her husband, J. D. Rector. of the home, Sedan, KS, two daughters. Kate Stettler, Sedan, KS and Nancy Saylor, Independence, KS, one son, Jay Darvl Rector, Loganville, GA, one brother, Frank H. Houck, Littleton, CO, one sister, Sally Ward, Ellis, KS and six grandchildren, Daryle Ann, Charley Paul, Jayson and Martha Stettler and Grayce and Blair Rector. She is also survived by a multitude of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Martha Elizabeth Rector.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services for Cynthia Houck Rector were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday. May 8, 2001, at the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan, KS. The Reverend Barbara Bloxsom officiated. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

MR. RAYMOND RED CORN
PAWHUSKA - Raymond Red Corn of Pawhuska, Okla. passed away at his home on Monday evening, Dec. 1, 2003.
Services are pending with Johnson Funeral Home in Pawhuska. Raymond is the brother-inlaw of Margie Myers of Sedan, Kan.
On June 23, 1954, she mamed Edward Maxfield Redd at Clovis, N.M. and to this union were born four sons, Lee, Mackie, Phillip and Jeff and one daughter, Nadine. Frances and Ed lived in Oklahoma and other places where Ed was stationed with the military before moving to Elk County in 1975.
She was a devoted wife and mother and was employed at Howard Twilight Manor for several years. Frances enjoyed collecting and making clothes for Barbie dolls. She also devoted many hours to creating crafts, crocheting and making quilts for her family.
She is survived by her husband, Ed, her sons, Lee, Sayre, Okla., Mackie, Udall, Kan., Phillip, Sedan, Kan., and Jeff, Weleetka, Okla., her daughter, Nadine Redd, Kansas City, Kan., a brother, Kenneth Matthews, Luficin, Texas, her sisters, Audrey Dwyer, Colorado Springs, Colo., Georgie Roedell, Newkirk, Okla., and Betty Morrison, Woodward, Okla., 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Lindley Boxford and Alfred Boxford.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, with Lloyd G. Zimmerman officiating. Recorded selections were played of When the Last Leaves Fall and Close Your Eyes, written and sung by Mackie Redd. The casket bearers were Shane Brower, Austin Redd, Casey Redd, Douglas Redd, Lee Redd, Mackie Redd, Phillip Redd and Rodney Smith. Interment was held in the Moline Cemetery at Moline, Kan.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
REV. EDWARD L. REDFIELD
Reverend Edward L. Redfield, age 83, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, formerly of Sedan, Kansas passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at Carolina House of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
He was born March 16, 1923 in Carterville, Illinois to John Luther and Dora (Phillips) Redfield. He grew up and attended school in Carterville, Illinois. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946 when he was honorably discharged. He married Iola Arnold on February 14, 1949 in Alton, Illinois. He attended and graduated from Central American Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. He ministered in Sedan at the United Methodist Church from 1968 until 1973. He retired from ministry in 1991 after serving as pastor in many other places in Kansas for thirty-six years. He was an avid supporter of all high school sports teams in the towns in which he lived.
He is survived by his wife Iola Redfield of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; two daughters, Karen Metcalf of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Lisa Houck and husband Dave of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; two sisters; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; one brother and one granddaughter.
Family and friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, January 8, 2007 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Jerry Bever officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, Kansas. Military Rites will be conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard, Fort Riley, Kansas.

MRS. BETTY J. REED
Betty J. Reed, age 42, of Peru, Kansas passed away Sunday, January 7, 2007 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan, Kansas.
She was born November 11, 1964 in Independence, Kansas to Joseph and Bethene (Antle) Snider. She attended school in Caney, Kansas. She was a longtime resident of Niotaze and Peru, Kansas. She married Marvin “Bud” Reed, Sr. on July 4, 1989. They later divorced.
She is survived by one son, Jeremy Snider of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters, Bethene and Jolene Reed, both of Caney, Kansas; her father, Joe Snider of Sedan, Kansas; three brothers, Clifton “Yogi” Snider of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma, Rick Snider of Sedan, Kansas and Cecil Snider.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bethene.

MR. CHESTER D. REED
Chester D. Reed, age 95, of Sedan, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.
He was born April 3, 1912 south of Peru to Chester Arthur and Leona (Kirkendall) Reed. He attended Davis Creek country school east of Peru and graduated from Peru High School in 1931. He later attended Pittsburg State University for one year, then he returned to the Peru area where he farmed and ranched until he retired in 1993 and moved to Sedan. He married Nova M. Lamb on Feb. 21, 1934 in Independence. On Feb. 21,2008 they would have been married 74 years. She survives at the home in Sedan.
He served on the Peru School Board for several years. He was founding member of the Twin Caney Watershed board, where he served as director. He was a member of the Peru United Methodist Church and the Chautauqua County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Nova Reed of Sedan; two sons, Charles Arthur Reed of Sedan, and Ronald "Joe" Reed of Peru; one brother, Ward Reed of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Marjorie Jaques of Nashville, Ark.; five grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hubert and Doyle and one sister Martha.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at Peru United Methodist Church in Peru with Earl Tresner officiating. Burial followed at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze.

MRS. LEATHA ALLIENE REED
ELK CITY, Kan. - Leatha Alliene Reed of Independence, Kan. and a long time resident of Elk City, Kan., died Saturday, March 13,2005, at Heatherwood Estates. She was 92.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at the First Christian Church of Elk City. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City.
The daughter of Ora Dell and Mary (Warner) McCarty, she was born June 6, 1912 near Elk City, Kan. She was united in marriage to Sammie Fowler Reed on June 6, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1985.
Mrs. Reed graduated from Elk City High School as Valedictorian in 1930. After being a homemaker for a number of years, she returned to school, graduating from Independence Junior College in 1958 and from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg in 1964. Following her graduation from Independence Junior College, Mrs. Reed was an elementary school teacher at the Elk City Grade School, retiring in 1977.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Elk City.
Survivors include a son, James Reed, Elk City, Kan., two daughters, Berneeda Moses, Tulsa, Okla. and Janice Hall, Owasso, Okla., three sisters, Margaret Oliver, Missouri, Juanita Newton and Doris Tallent, both of Elk City, Kan., 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Kay Johnson, one brother, James and two sisters, Virginia Byerly and Edna Mae Foster-Chism, one grandchild and one great grandchild.

Caney- C. H. (Herb) Reed, 60, of Caney, died Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita. He was a retired boilermaker. He was born Feb. 28, 1913, near Niotaze, the son of Arthur and Leona (Kirkendafi) Reed.
A veteran of World War 11, he served in the Navy. He was a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Leona Reed of Caney; two sisters, Mrs. Margie Jacques of Nashville, Ark., and Mrs. Martha Ingle of Phoenix; three brothers, Chester of Peru, Ward of Tulsa and Doyle of Houston.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze under the direction of the Graves Funeral Home .
MR. MARVIN REED, SR.
PERU, Kan. - Marvin S. “Bud” Reed, Sr., 65, of Peru, Kan. died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at his home in Peru.
He was born April 15, 1939 at rural Havana, Kan. to Alfred “Winnie” and Edith (Banning) Reed.
On Jan. 3, 1959, he married Linda Lee White at San Pablo, Calif. They lived in several locations before returning to Peru in 1971. She preceded him in death in 1988.
On July 4, 1989, he married Betty Jo Snider. They were later divorced.
Bud worked in the oil fields.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin S. Reed, Jr., Shidler, Okla. and Robert Dean Reed, Shaw, SC; four daughters, Deena Kane, Wichita, Kan., Vicky Stevens, Minden Mines, Mo., Bethene Reed and Jolene Reed, both of Peru, Kan.; two brothers, Harold Reed, Peru, Kan. and Carl Reed, Midland, Texas; two sisters, Peggy Ballard and Deena O’Keefe, both of California; 10 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
A memorial graveside service was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at the Havana Cemetery in Havana, Kan.

MRS. PEGGY REED
Peggy Reed, 68, of Peru passed away Saturday morning, August 12, 2006, at Elk Manor in Moline.
She was born on March 7, 1938, in Vinita, Okla., to Everett and Edna (Parnell) Terry. She grew up in Vinita where she attended school, graduating from Vinita High School in 1956.
Shortly after graduation, she married Jack King of Centralia, Okla.; they had two sons, Terry King and Todd King. They were divorced in 1976.
On Feb. 14, 1981, she married Joe Reed of Peru. Following their marriage, they made their home in Peru until her death following a long illness.
Prior to becoming disabled she was employed by Sedan Seed House, Dr. Leon Hills, D.D.S., and Pleasant Valley Manor as a physical therapist. She was a former co-owner of the Ranch Restaurant and former partner in the Cross Roads Club.
Survivors include her husband, Joe of the home; two sons, Terry King of Peru and Todd King of Wamego, Kan.; two step-daughters, Rhonda Reed of Salina and Paula Reed of Glenpool, Okla.; three sisters, Maxine McDougal of Easley, S.C., Shirley Collins of Shell Knob, Mo., and Carmalita Lorenz of Sedan; three grandsons, Tanner King of Manhattan, Kan., Madison King of Wamego, Kan., and Richard Todd King of Morton, IL; and two granddaughters, Hadley King of Bartlesville and Kylea Newby of Moore, Okla.
Her parents Everett and Edna Terry preceded her in death.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, in the Fairview Cemetery at Niotaze with Reverend Delons Click officiating.

Stephen Paul Reed, age 19, former Russell, Kansas resident, died Wednesday, December 6, 2000, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS. He was born September 6, 1981 in Sedan, Kansas to Harold and Pilot (Loveland) Reed, Jr. He is the foster son of Jamey and Angie (Keener) Roth.
He was a student and attended Russell High School and Hays High School. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Russell, KS and a member of Russell Special Olympics Roughriders Team. He had lived in Russell, KS for seven years before moving to Victoria, KS one month ago.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Harold and Annette Reed, Jr. of Peru KS, foster parents, Jamey and Angie Roth of the home four brothers, Nick Reed, Dustin Reed, Jobin Reed and Tyler Reed, all of Peru, KS, three foster brothers, Ryan Downing, Joseph Roth and Jacob Roth, all of the home, one foster sister, Adella Roth of the home, grandparents, Harold and Edna Reed of Peru, KS, foster grandparents, Bill and Carolyn Roth of Dighton, KS, Dan Keener of Rush Center, KS, Ann Keener of Lenexa, KS, step grandparents. MRS. SHIRLEY J. REED
Shirley J. Reed, age 35, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away December 24, 2001. She was born to James and Bettie (Hull) Smith on July 11, 1966 in Boulder, CO. She was raised in Cedar Vale and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1984. She attended Independence Community College and became a Registered Nurse. She had been working at Jane Phillips Hospital in Bartlesville, OK in the Cardiac ICU. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Independence.
She is survived by her father, James Smith, Moorhead, MN, mother, Bettie Wright, Cedar Vale, KS, daughters, Rachel D. Reed, Caitlyn A. Reed & Rikki Jo Reed, all of Cedar Vale, KS, a brother, James W. Smith, Winterhaven, FL and sisters Aline K. Boyer, Wahpeton, ND and Patricia A. Danes, Arkansas City, KS.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Gladys Smith, of lone, WA.
Services will be held Thursday January 3, 2002, at 2:00p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Mile, KS. Visitation will be January 2, 2002 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Maurice was born August 26, 1920 in Horton, Kan. to George Ambrose and Marie Catherine (McDonald) Reid. He grew up in Kansas, where he attended schools, graduating from Topeka High School. He was very much a part of the athletic program while in high school. He then attended St. Benedict’s College in Atchison, Kan. on a football scholarship and from there he attended Rockhurst College in Kansas City. He then entered the United States Air Force, serving during World War II and continued with the military for 30 years, retiring in 1971 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He also graduated from the Air University at Maxwell Field, Ala.
He married Ruth Emma Mack on July 3, 1947 in Kansas City, Kan. and they moved to various states while he served in the military. He worked as a director of food services at different hospitals while living in the various states. The last of these moves was to Salina, Kan. in 1970, where they lived for 12 years an he worked at St. John’s Hospital as their food service director.
Following his retirement fron the hospital in 1982, they move to Blackwell, Okla. to make their home. He began working for the Blackwell Public Schools and drove school bus #9 for 11 1/2 years, where he never missed single day of work. He retired from the school in 1999 and began spending his time managing the many rental homes he and his wife owned together.
He was a member of tht American Legion Post #7 in Blackwell and has held the position of service officer. He was also member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Ponca City, Okla.
Survivors include his wife. Ruth Reid, of the home, daughters, Debra Secrest, Blackwell. Okla., Sandra Cizek and her husband, Dennis, Marshalltown, Iowa and Rhonda Koons and her husband, Dennis, Salina, Kan.. seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Lawrence Reid.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 4. 2002, with full military graveside rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Tonkawa, Okla., with Father Ken Armstrong of the Grace Episcopal Church in Ponca City officiating.
Honorary casket bearers were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Memorials have been established with the Grace Episcopal Church, 109 N. 13th, Ponca City, Okla. 74601 and the Blackwell Take Down Club, do Blackwell High School, 303 E. Coolidge, Blackwell, Okla. 74631.
MRS. LEONA G. REMMY
Leona G. (Short) Remmy, 93, died Aug. 31, 2004. Her funeral was at Mission Chapel Mausoleum.
She was born Oct. 15, 1910 in Jenks, Okla., the daughter of Nicholas L. and Mary Anna (Bray) Short. She moved to Sedan, Kan. in 1912, where she was raised and schooled.
Aunt Nonie was a seamstress by trade and worked as such before World War II. She married William Eary Remmy on June 6, 1941 in Wellington, Kan. and moved to Wichita. She was a member of the Unity Church.
Aunt Nonie was preceded in death by six brothers, four sisters, husband, William, and an infant son, Charles Ray. She is survived by one sister, Mary E. Brown, Arlington, Texas and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been made to Harry Hynes Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita KS 67202-3805.
MRS. GERALDINE REXROAD
Geraldine (Jerry) Rexroad, a 44-year resident of Las Vegas. Nev., left this world to join her husband of 61 years.
She was born on Sept. 1, 1928 as Geraldine Padgett in Chautauqua, Kan., and married John Steven (Pappy) Rexroad on Feb. 17, 1946. A member of Eastern Star, she was a loving wife and a caring woman, caring for every wayward soul that John brought home as one of her own children.
She is survived by her children, Linda, Susie, Steven, Jimmy and Tammanika, eleven grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
In loving memory, the family will intern her in the family plot in Kansas this summer. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, in memory of Geraldine Rcxroad.

Detroit - John R. Reynolds, 63, of Detroit died Tuesday in Michigan. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville, Ala., with the Rev. Clayton Burchell officiating.
He was born February 25, 1925 in Sedan, Kansas, the son of Ruth and Louie Reynolds.
Survivors include his wife, Novella G. Reynolds; two daughters, Dawn Marie Reynolds of Michigan and Carol Ann Reynolds of California; a stepson, James Key of Huntsville; a sister, Ora Beth White of Missouri; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral service was held on Thursday, September 29, 1988, at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home in Redford, Michigan. A service was held at 1 p.m., October 1st in Huntsville, Alabama. Interment in Athens City cemetery, Athen, Alabama.
MRS. RUBY R. ROADS
SEDAN Ruby Reader Rhoads, 92, of Sedan, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at her home in Sunshine Village in Sedan.
She was born on Jan. 16, 1913 at Prescott, Ark. to Oliver Terrell and Mary Ellen (Fransisco) Ingersoll. She was the fifth of 12 children.
Ruby married Homer Albert Rhoads on June 15, 1929 at Prescott, Ark. After they left Arkansas, they were long time residents of Belle Plaine, Kan. and Pawhuska, Okla. Mr. Rhoads preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1992 at Pawhuska. They had been married 62 years.
In February of 1999, she moved from Pawhuska to Sunshine Village in Sedan and was a resident there until her death.
She is survived by one son, Larry Rhoads, Wichita, Kan.; two daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Lee Richards, Florence, Colo., and Sherry and Garry Johnson, Elgin, Kan.; four sisters, Nellie McVay, Pine Bluff, Ark., Mildred Johnson, Rosa Belle Orren, and Wanda Wecker, all of Prescott, Ark.; 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Homer; one daughter, LaVerne Newhouse; an infant son; two granddaughters, Mary Ellen (Johnson) Thornton and Jill Elaine (Richards) Snyder; six brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, in the Belle Plaine Cemetery at Belle Plaine, Kan.
Friends may call on Thursday from 9-9 p.m. and Friday from 9-11 am, at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his daughters, April White, El Dorado and Amber Jackson, Wichita, brother, Samuel, Allentown, Pa., sisters, Saundra Martin, Wichita, Polly Curtis, Broken Arrow, Okla., mother, June (Murphy) Rhudy, Wichita and grandchildren, Thaddaeus and Laryn White and Dohnovyn and LyNise Jackson. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale.
A vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Downing & Lahey Mortuary West in Wichita. Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Anne Catholic Church in Wichita.

Frances was born on the family farm in Lookout Valley at Cedar Vale on August 18, 1902 to William Grant and Meranda Elizabeth (Oliver) Rice. After attending grade school at Centennial District 66 in Cowley County,. she took a 1 year stenographer’s course in Winfield. She then spent about fourteen years with the Citizens National and Cedar Vale National banks. During this time, she enjoyed traveling and sightseeing with her good friend, Mollie.
She lived 10 years on a Grainola, Okla. farm southwest of Cedar Vale. Here she very much enjoyed gardening and canning vegetables and fruits. She placed first with a Victory Garden.
Frances learned “fancy work” and crocheting in her earliest teens. She entered her doilies and her home canning in the county fairs and received many blue and red ribbons. She learned to play the piano and enjoyed playing and singing her favorite hymns. Reading and writing were also favorite pastimes.
Much of her life was spent helping others, particularly the aged. She helped with the care of an aged great maternal aunt, Nancy Ann Rogers, and she also lived with her parents in their elderly years. She lived in Arkansas City and Hutchinson for a few years, but for some years now had been a resident of Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan and Cedar Vale Manor.
Frances was a longtime member of the Baptist Church and an avid student of the Bible. She would say, “Human knowledge must be understood to be loved, but Divine knowledge must be loved to be understood.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, an older sister, Myrtle Mae Sutton Sinor, a younger brother, Charles Jonathan Rice, and a nephew, George Francis Sutton.
Survivors include one nephew, Charles William (Billy) Sutton, Wichita, and 3 nieces, Elizabeth Sutton Sobba, Wichita, Mary Carolee Rice Struble, Salisbury, Mo., and Theresa Jeanette Rice Palmer, Austin, Texas. Frances had twenty great nieces and nephews and seventeen survive.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City. Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of the arrangements.
MR. LLOYD L. RICHARDSON
Lloyd L. Richardson, 80 years old, died on June 2, 2008 at his home in Zenith, Kan. Lloyd was born on May 26, 1928 in Arkansas City, to Fred and Edith Sanner Richardson.
He was raised in Arkansas City and was a mechanic for the fire and police departments. He was a member of the Crescent Masonic Lodge #133AF and AM. On Jan. 12,2946 he married Charlotte L. Stockton at Arkansas City. She survives Lloyd.
He has two daughters, Lynda and husband, Larry Buck of Harker Heights, Texas, and Barbara and husband, Gary Rierson of Grenola, and a son Charles and wife Lucille Richardson of Zenith, nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He has five sisters and three brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Ronald Lee, and a sister and brother.
Graveside services were June 4, at Feldhut Cemetery in Stafford, Kan. Les Parks (Captain of Ark City fire department) presided. Pallbearers were grandsons and sons in law. Before moving to Zenith he lived in Elgin. He had music once a month at his home in Elgin, and attended the Jonesburg Church.
MR. LESLIE C. RICKEY - Submitted by Freida Wells
Leslie Clarence Rickey, 85, of Sedan, died Wednesday, March 18, 1992, in Gearing, Nebr. He was born July 22, 1906, in Caney to Edwin Robert and Mamie Delpha (Smith) Rickey. He was an engineer in the petroleum industry and a member of the United Methodist Church.
On July 31, 1928, in Sedan, he and Viola Violet Farrell were united in marriage. She preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 1964. One daughter Anita Houston, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, Phillip of Gearing, Nebr.; two brothers Jim of Pryor, Okla. Eloise Richard of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Dorothy Wicklin of Pauls Valley, Okla.; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Mar 23, at 10:00 a.m. in the Graves-Baird chapel. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Sedan. Rev. Susan Montgomery officiated. Graves-Baird Funeral Home, Sedan was in charge of arrangements

MR. LAWRENCE RIDENOUR
Former County Resident Passes Away At Anaheim, Calif.
Lawrence Ridenour, a former Chautauqua county resident, passed away April 20 at Anaheim Calif. He had made his home with his sister and family at Stanton, California, for several years. Funeral services were held at Backs and Terry Chapel at two o’clock April 22 and he was buried at the Westminster cemetery, near Anaheim.
He was an old timer of Kansas living at Monett for a great many years before going to California.
His father, Martin Ridenour, preceded him in death in 1921. Lawrence leaves to mourn his death his sister, Mrs. H. A. Riley of Stanton, Calif.; a brother, Jerry Ridenour of Anaheim, Calif., and a brother, Grant Ridenour in Tampa, Florida; eighteen nieces and nephews besides other relatires and a host of friends.
She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and had been active in it in all the communities she had lived. She had lived in the communities of Atlanta, Cambridge, Corwin, Hazleton, and Stafford, before moving to Cedar Vale in the early 1980’s.
She married Fred W. Bennett on March 1, 1923 in Winfield. He preceded her in death Feb. 21, 1988, after 55 years of marriage. To this union was born three children, stanley Bennett deceased, Larry E. Bennett of Fr. Collins Co. and Sharon Bennett McKee of Talala, Okla. She has two surviving sisters, Jean Keller of Olathe and Jacque Butlar of Quincy, Ill. She has numerous grand and great grandchildren as well as step grand and great grand children.
She married Charles Ridgway July 27, 1991, at Cedar Vale and he survives with his five children.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July, 16, at the First Methodist Church in Cedar Vale, interment at the Dexter Cemetery, and memorial at the Harry Hynes Hospice.
Friends may call Monday July 15, 2002 from 4 to 8 p.m. Arrangements by Wheeler Funeral Home Cedar Vale.
Delbert lived in the Howard area until uniting in marriage with Loretta Pearl Taylor on October 26, 1940, in the community of Fiat northeast of Howard. The newlyweds made their home in Howard until Delbert was called to serve his country during World War II. Delbert served in the European Theater with the United States Army. In 1982, Delbert and Loretta returned to Howard staying in the Howard and Wichita area until September of 2001 when they moved to Honda to live with their daughter Anettia and son-in-law Mike.
Delbert was a member of American Legion Carter-Rader Post #149 at Howard and was a life member of VFW Post 1949 in Washington. He was a member of the Church of Christ and baptized as a young teenager in Indian Creek.
Delbert is survived by his daughters, Theresa Smith of Howard, Anettia Nephew and her husband Mike of Eustis, Florida and Tena Beaushaw and her husband Chris of Tacoma, Washington; nine grandchildren and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Loretta P. Riggs on February 1, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his son Stephen M. Riggs; his parents Walter and Mae Riggs, a brother Virgil E. Riggs, and 2 infant grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2002 at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Lloyd G. Zimmerman officiating. Military funeral honors were conducted by American Legion CarterRader Post #149 at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
MR. FLOYD WILLIAM RIGGS
Floyd William Riggs passed away Thursday, August 16, 2001, at his home south of Moline, Kansas. He was 79 years of age. Floyd was born on March 23, 1922 at Wellington, Kansas, to Raymond R. and Ida Olive (Baker) Riggs. He grew to manhood in Sumner County, Kansas, graduating from Geuda Springs High School. Floyd served three years in the United States Army during World War II.
On May 5, 1946, he married Patricia Elaine Nichols at Howard, Kansas. They made their home in Sumner County, and later moved to Chautauqua County. Howard was a farmer and rancher throughout his life.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Coffeyville, the Masonic Lodge at Dexter, and was a long time member of the Sedan Chamber of Commerce. Floyd devoted many hours to being a 4-H Leader and was a Master Hunter Safety Instructor.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Moline; his sons, Dr. Glen and his wife Judy of Sedan, and Rex and his wife Sylvia of Arkansas City; his daughter, Lynda Elaine Marshall of Cedar Vale; his brother; Lawrence Riggs of Parsons; his sisters, Bonnie Landes and Jo Ann Bertrand both of Wellington, Doris Hackett of Lake Charles, Louisiana; 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Louise Sawyer and his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2001, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas with Joe Nichols of Longton and Rev. Dois Nix of the Sedan Baptist Church officiating. Eulalia Bird will be the organist with Licia Nichols singing "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden". The honorary pallbearers were DeWayne Bamett, Jeny Blakesly, Charlie Chase, Paul Fulsom, Gene Jarboe, Ray Martin, Ed Morton, Ross Sherwood, Loren Smith, Vern Sweaney, Tony Turner and Kenny Vandever. Private interment will be held in the Casement Cemetery near Sedan.
Memorials have been establishcd with the Chautauqua County 4_H Scholarship Fund and the Sedan Area EMS. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
REV. DR. JOHN RIGGS, JR.
TEXAS - The Rev. Dr. John Forest Riggs, Jr., dentist, mayor and priest in the Episcopal Dioceses of Kansas, Texas and Fort Worth, died on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 at 12:45 a.m. at the Hospice Austin Christopher House, from complications due to cancer.
Father Riggs was born on March 29, 1929 in McKinney, Texas. The son of John Forest and Annie Faye (Andrews) Riggs, Sr. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from North Texas State University and his D.D.S. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He received his Masters of Divinity from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest. John was a Capitain in the United States Air Force.
John Riggs was a dentist for over 20 years in Kansas, serving a term on the Kansas Dental Board. He was also a teacher in the Wichita School of Dental Hygiene. He was ordained to the Deaconate and Priesthood in 1986 and served for 19 years at churches in Sedan and Cedar Vale, Kan.; Taylor, Austin, Comanche and Dublin, Texas. He was appointed to and served on many Diocesan, Provincial and National boards and committees.
John was also a Mason and received his 50 year Masonic pin.
He was married to Gloria Jean Gans for 37 years and his legacy is his three sons, John III, Thomas and Mark; two daughters, Martha and Anna and seven grandchildren.
The funeral service was be at St. Vincent Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Bedford,Texas on Friday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Hospice Austin Christopher House in Austin, Texas or to St. Augustine Orthodox Church in Pflugerville, Texas. Arrangements were by CookWaldeniCapital Parks Funeral Home, in Pflugerville, Texas.
MRS. ALTA M. RILEY
COFFEYVILLE - Alta M. Riley, 83, of Coffeyville, Kan. passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 5, 1919 in Peru, Kan. to Oriville and Lela (Couiver) Wininger. She grew up in Peru and attended school there, graduating from Peru High School. Alta married Roscoe Riley on Oct. 5, 1935 in Sedan, Kan. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1999. They lived in Sedan for two years until moving to Coffeyville. In the 1960’s, she became a self-employed seamstress, which she remained until her retirement in 2003. She was a member of the Baptist Church in Peru.
She is survived by one daughter, Lela Riley, Coffeyville, Kan., five granddaughters, five great grandchildren and one faithful dog companion, Lady.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two granddaughters, one grandson and one great granddaughter.
Graveside services were held Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Bro. Andy Daniels officiating.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society and can be left with the Graves Funeral Home of Coffeyville.
MR. CURTIS A. RILEY
SEDAN, Kan. - Curtis Armine Riley, 63, of rural Sedan, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, near his home.
He was a born July 18, 1941 at Cedar Vale, Kan. to Edward M. and Mary V. (Kelley) Riley. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Sedan, receiving his elementary education at High Rock School. He then attended Peru High School, graduating in 1960.
In May 1961, he joined the U.S.Air Force. He received an honorable discharge in April 1967.
On June 13, 1983, he married Jaycee Maddrid at Sheridan, Wyo. Following their marriage, they made their home in Wyoming, where Mr. Riley was employed with the Wyoming State Highway Department. Following his retirement, they returned to the Riley family farm southeast of Sedan in September 2002.
He was a member of the Chautauqua Southern Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kan.
Survivors include his wife, Jaycee, of the home; one step-son, Kelly Riley, Missoula, Mont.; four brothers, Carl Riley, Sedan, Kan., Adrian Riley, rural Coffeyville, Kan., Kenneth Riley, Jackson, Tenn., and Steve Riley, Parker, Kan.; one sister, Edna Stephens, Caney, Kan. and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one step-son.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in the Chautauqua Southern Baptist Church. Cremation has taken place.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society and contributions may be left with the funeral home. David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Rebecca Riley, 76, widow of Tom Riley and pioneer of Chautauqua County, died at 6 o’clock this morning at her home west of Monett. She had been invalid for some time.
Surviving Mrs. Riley are three sons, Ben Riley of Sedan, Claude Riley of Virgil and Roy Riley of the home, and four daughters, Mrs. Anna Shircliff of Chautauqua, Mrs. Pearl Duggan of Sedan, Mrs. Stella Baggert of Dexter, Ore., and Mrs. Viva Smith of Cooston, Ore. The body was removed to the A. S. Baird Funeral Home, pending completion of arrangements for services.
MR. GLENN G. RINCK
PERU - Glenn 0. Rinek, 89, of rural Peru, Kan., passed away Monday, May 26, 2003, at the sedan City Hospital in Sedan, Kan.
Glenn was born Nov. 21, 1913 in Altamont, Kan. to James S. and Chestie (Johnson) Rinck. He was raised and educated in Peru, Kan., where he graduated from Peru High School.
In 1937, Glenn married Roberta Clara Miner and they later divorced. Glenn farmed and raised cattle in the Peru area for many years. He was a former Peru school board member and a member of the Caney Valley Watershed.
Glenn is survived by two children, Robert L. Rinck, rural Niotaze, Kan., and Betty F. Redding, Westlake, Texas, one sister, Helen Miner, Eudora, Kan., six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Karen Jane Palmer, two brothers and one sister.
Glenn’s body was bequeathed and donated to the University of Kansas Medical School, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Kansas City, Kansas for anatomical study. No services are planned at this time.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Niotazé United Methodist Church in Niotaze, Kan. Memorials may be left with Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home & Crematory, 306W. Main, Independence, Kan.

Rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at the Graves Memorial chapel at Caney for Grace Margaret Rinck, 74, of Niotaze. She died Oct. 25 at the Sedan City hospital where she had been a patient for a short time. Interment will be at the Fairview cemetery at Niotaze, Rev. L. E, Dixon will officiate.
She was born Dec. 15, 1902 in Missouri to Siebelt and Grace (Cooper) Smith. She married Lester Rinck Aug. 10, 1923 at Rockfort, Mo. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the United Methodist church of Niotaze, the E.H .U., and the Women's Society of Christian Service.
Survivors include four sons, Jim of Havana, Joe of Menomonee, Wisc., Clyde of Hayward, Calif., and Ray of Independence; two sisters, Mary Rosenbahm of Langdon, Mo., and Leona David of Rockfort, Mo.; two brothers, Fred Smith and Tom Smith both of Rockfort, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday for Mr. James Stanley Rinck who died at his home here on May 26. The Rev. Jep Williams, pastor of the First Baptist church in Caney officiated taking his text from Ex. 20:12 and using the Fifth commandment, “Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother.” Mr. Melvin Sullivan and Mrs. Frank Kerd sang, “Face to Face,” “Does Jesus Care,” and “Nearer to the Heart of God,” with Mrs. Jep Williams accompanying them at the piano.

Gena Adeline Rinker, 89, of Sedan, Kansas, died Thursday, August 5, 1993, at Jane Phillips Hospital, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She was born April 24, 1904, in Sedan, Kansas, to Ralph Eugene and Lillie Adeline (Hobson) Rinker. She was a retired Postal Clerk and a member of the First Christian Church of Sedan, and the Sedan City Hospital Auxilary.
Survivors include one brother, Wilber Rinker of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and one sister, Letna B. Griffin of Lake Wood, California.
Memorial services were held Monday, August 9, 1993, at 2:00 p.m., in the Sedan First Christian Church. Rev. Ruth Ann Claerhout officiated. Graves-Baird Funeral Home, Sedan, was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial in her name has been established with the Sedan First Christian Church.
