MRS. HATTIE DRAKE VANDRUFF - Submitted byGerald Hobson
About as brave an act as has been performed in this part of the country was that of Misses Emma Rindchen and Clara Ankrom, in crossing Big Caney when it was so deep they had to get up on the buggy seat to keep from getting wet. They did this in order to decorate with flowers and drape in mourning the Christian church stand and chairs last Tuesday, on the occasion of the funeral of Mrs. Hattie Vandruff.
Hattie Drake was born Oct. 31, 1877, and married to E. Wilson Vandruff May 30, 1895; died Aug. 15, 1899, after suffering in bed seven months with that dreaded disease consumption. She suffered a great deal, but with great patience. She loved her Savior and said she was ready and willing to meet him. She united with the Christian church four years previous to her death.
"Thee voice that cheered our happy home
Is stilled by death's cold hand;
But if we are faithful here we'll meet again
In that happy, happy land."
The funeral services were conducted at the Christian church by Rev. W. F. Parmeter of Winfield. He preached a splendid sermon to a large audience, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Brown graveyard north of Hewins, followed by a large delegation of relatives and friends. She leaves many relatives, besides a grief-stricken companion and one little boy thirteen months old to mourn their loss. They have the sympathy of the entire community.
