Mrs. Watson was born September 21, 1909 to Chris Alfred and Talitha Lee (Darnall) Hendricks in the Grafton Community northeast of Sedan. After graduating from the 8th grade, Mrs. Watson worked in Sedan doing housework. On September 1, 1929, she married Roy Milford Watson of Sedan. The family stayed in the Chautauqua County area of Kansas and Washington County in Oklahoma for several years, then moved to Wichita. where Roy learned the trade of a machinist, a trade he followed for the rest of his life. The family also lived in Hutchinson and Dodge City before starting a move to California, where there were better job opportunities. They packed their car and a trailer with all their household and personal belongings and headed west on December 7, 1941. They were surprised to see that they were practically the only car headed west. Everyone else was traveling east. When they stopped for gasoline, they learned from the proprietor that the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. After discussing the matter, they continued west to San Francisco. As tires wore out, they had to abandon some of their belongings enroute. Roy found work in San Francisco and finances for the family improved. Later, they moved to Phoenix, AZ where he worked in a defense plant. They lived wherever Roy found work. At the end of the war, the defense plants shut down and they moved on to Claypool, AZ, where Roy worked in the copper mines and Faye operated a laundry. Later, they moved to southern California where Roy worked for Douglas Aircraft, later McDonnell. Roy was close to retirement when the company failed to receive a new contract He was laid off and he and Faye bought a small, country grocery store near Mountain View, AR, which they operated, It wasn’t long until Roy was recalled to work, the company receiving a new contract. It was decided that he should return and establish a pension. In the meantime, Faye, with the help of her son, Otis, stayed in Arkansas where they continued to operate the store. Roy received his retirement, a buyer was found for the store, and they returned to California, living in the city of Hawaiian Gardens.
When Roy’s health failed, he and Faye returned to Sedan. They bought a house on East Main. He worked as a machinist in his retirement years and for a time was employed as a Pumper in an oil field. He died on September 24, 1977, the result of cancer.
Faye made Sedan her home. She joined the First Baptist Church and took part in the women’s work there. When she was 75 years old, she enrolled in a class for oil painting, where she discovered an unknown talent. In her senior years, she produced many lovely pictures and even won prizes at the Chautauqua County Fair. She thoroughly enjoyed the various activities available here. A Boston Terrier named “Bozo” was very dear to her.
Faye is survived by five children, Melvin Watson, Modesto, CA, Rosa Lee Dodd, Claypool, AZ. Alfred Watson, El Cajon, CA, Wilma Saunders, Romance, AR and Otis W. Watson, Sedan, KS, two sisters, Tina Halderman, Cherryvale, KS and Hazel Miller, Sedan, KS, seventeen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren. MR. OTIS W. WATSON
Otis W. Watson. age 63, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Saturday morning. April 21. 2001, at his home in Sedan, KS.
Otis Watson was born September 6, 1937 at Copan, Oklahoma, the fifth child of Roy Wilford and Faye (Hendricks) Watson. After his birth, his parents returned to Sedan and then in 1941, made a trek through Hutchinson, Dodge City and on to California, seeking a place where Roy could find steady work.
One day of their trip, they noticed that they were the only travelers headed west. When they stopped at a filling station and mentioned it, the operator said, "Haven't you heard? The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor." A lot of people from the West Coast were headed to central parts of the United States. After discussing the problem, Roy and Faye decided to continue toward California. Roy found work as a machinist in San Francisco.
Otis remembers nights in San Francisco when the message "Blackout! Blackout! This is a blackout!" would blare over the city. Everyone had to be ready if the enemy decided to attack. Later, the Watsons moved to Claypool, AZ. There Otis and his friends spent days roaming the hills looking for treasures. Otis said many times it is a wonder he was not killed. The rocks, scorpions, bobcats, snakes and other animals were often prey of the young boys. By the time he was in high school, the family had moved to Garden Grove, CA. When he was in high school, Otis had a paper route thirteen miles long and with one hundred fifty customers. At that time, he was also part of a male ensemble. It was the highlight of his schooling. The group was invited to sing at several gatherings, for birthdays, celebrations and such. Upon graduation, he had only one thought, to join the Navy. Both of his brothers and brother-in-laws had been in the Navy. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Seminole, an auxiliary cargo attack ship and he had the opportunity to visit many foreign ports in the Pacific area.
As much as lie liked the Navy, he thought he might like civilian life better. When he was discharged, he went to work for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach. After a while, he decided to go to college and studied engineering drafting for two years. Before he completed the course, he was offered a job at North American Rockwell for $1.50 per hour. He started in the mail room, but was soon promoted to the computer room, working with the largest and most sophisticated computers in the world at that time. His computer was responsible for trajectories accurate enough that the astronauts would not miss their target. The technology developed at NASA eventually was used to help every phase of life. Otis was involved when Saturn, the Apollo space capsule, was launched. He had the privilege of getting to know some of the astronauts.
Otis married Susann Hassell and became very attached to her two year old daughter, Christy. In 1969, Otis and Susann had a son, Robert Edwin. Following a divorce, Otis gained custody of Bob and returned to Sedan, where his parents had moved when his father developed cancer. Otis worked at the Sedan Times-Star, primarily in charge of the photography department. In 1979. he married Betty (Byerly) Casement. This marriage also made him a stepfather to four more children.
Otis loved to sing and play the guitar, piano and organ. All of his musical skills were self taught. He played by ear. He also enjoyed photography, acrylic painting, woodcraft, flower gardening and studying about the stars, planets, galaxies, comets and other heavenly bodies. He wrote stories, poems and songs. From time to time, he enjoyed acting in melodramas. He would have preferred to be cast as the hero, but usually he was cast as the villain.
Otis did a lot of things for the community. At one time, he was chairman of the Sedan Chapter of PRIDE, hoping to make Sedan a better place to live. Back in the 1980’s, Otis and Betty published two volumes of Chautauqua County History. In 1993, they began the Tallgrass Country magazine because they felt that the good things about this community needed telling. He was a member of the Sedan First Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir, small vocal groups and solos. He usually accompanied himself on the omnichord.
His most recent work was with Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, where he brought the message for Sunday morning church services. He always sang a song to go with his message. He felt this was the most important task he did each week Otis worked quietly, generally without pay or notice. He just accepted those jobs as his to do and he did them well.
Otis was a member of the Sedan First Baptist Church, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Art Association and Volunteer Pastor at Pleasant Valley Manor.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home, one son, Robert Watson, Winfield, KS, two brothers, George Watson, El Cajon, CA and Melvin Watson, also of California, two sisters, Rosa Dodd, Claypool, AZ and Wilma Saunders, Romance, AZ, two stepsons, David Casement, Sedan, KS and Brad Casement, Salem, NH, two stepdaughters, Janis Schweitzer, St. Louis, MO and Susan Casement, Davis, CA and Seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at 10:00 am. at the First Baptist Church in Sedan, with Pastor Dois Nix officiating. Burial followed at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.
