Nix Graveyard
Elk County, Kansas


John Fletcher Nix and his wife Ailcy (Baker) Nix, donated one acre of ground for a burial place known as "The Nix Graveyard." This small private family cemetery, situated in a grove of cedar trees, is located in Liberty Township on the SE1/4 of Sect. 6, Twp. 29, Range 12 - land now owned by the Max Shinkle estate - approximately one-half mile west of the Union Valley School, and just east of where the Montrose School was located. The cemetery is on private property and there is no public road leading to it, as it was closed, years ago. No deed was found for the cemetery.

The nearest traveled roads today would be place the cemetery just north of the Quail Road and Road #23 intersection.

It has been reported that at least four adults and several children are buried in the Nix Cemetery, but only the following headstones were found:

(It is believed that Nathaniel Nix and his wife, Lodema (White) Nix, may be buried in this
cemetery, as well.  Lodema died on May 1, 1898 at the age of 79 yrs. 8 mo. 28 days).
